I've kind of lost interest in Google, but was curious if Kirkland is even viable career-wise. I'm at AWS in Seattle and it's a great place to work. Sr. SDE promo coming up in about a year or so. Work is impactful, great experience, ML involved. I landed the perfect project. I used to always want to work at Google, but I have heard recently that people feel underutilized, and/or bored. Does anyone think it's actually worth it to be at Google just to be there (even if it's a satellite office), or is it better to stay at Amazon HQ? I really want a bump in TC, but it would be unbearable to land on a crappy project where I feel underutilized, or if it's trivial work. I'll probably stay for at LEAST the next 3 years and see where our team goes. End-goal TC is 325, which is achievable at Sr. SDE at Amazon, but might take a while (maybe a few years from promo). TC 190 6 yoe SDE II
That's such a significant difference! Wish I could get in doing similar work that I am now. Maybe I'll just interview again and see what they have. I'll have to prep for next year. Did half hearted prep and got half hearted results a month ago.
Thanks!! Yeah I've found that to be true at Amazon as well. 5 years in retail and only a small part of it was really interesting. A whole year was simple AB testing. AWS is amazing, but I'm annoyed that I could be making a lot more money doing similar work. Plus, free food! ;)
I could see G getting rid of its cloud people in the next 2-3 years. The rationale is G cloud is unlikely to turn the tide and other well established branches in G do not have enough capacity to absorb.
Lol this is not true.
Maybe not, but azure and aws will not go away, and with a ceo from oracle that is good at this, i wouldn’t say it’s not possible
Your TC is low for your experience and position. If your goal is to reach only 325 in three from now, then you would have made much less at the end. Any work has ups and downs. Also the picture from outside is typically skewed. Few years before I declined Facebook after clearing the interviews, because I thought that I would be a drop in the ocean there when compared to the architect position I was holding in a good company. I also declined Amazon every time recruiter approached me, because I heard that work culture in Amazon is too tightly wound. After joining Google I realized that picture inside is entirely different from what folks talk about companies like these. If someone is feeling under utilized in a company like Google, then they aren't trying and waiting to be told what to do.
That's so true. Every says Amazon has terrible wlb, but that's never been my experience. At 325, I can retire before I'm 50. And tbh, would like to buy a house on the Eastside soon. Bump would definitely help.
G in Kirkland would be the best in terms of $$$ It’s well worth to try G at any point of your career: some of the best tech, great culture & perks, the ultimate resume stamp, etc.
I think once my current project slows down, I'll start prepping for Google. I think it could be a while, really feels like I got in on the ground floor on something that's going to take off (based on customer interest). And lots of room for growth. Thanks for your thoughts!
