Do you think Google search sucks because not all the information created nowadays is as indexable as they are on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Tiktok, or paywalled news sites? Personally, I don't visit as many niche websites as I used to.
I think that’s a small part of it. However, it’s not everything. Let’s face it. Wikipedia is by far one of the most useful websites out there. Want info on a topic? Wikipedia is the place to start. Google used to reflect that. But something changed around 2021 or so, and for some reason Wikipedia articles started getting buried. They were way down every time I wanted to know about a company or person or food or something. Instead, ads, stuff that is effectively or junk websites generated by AI or written on the cheap clouded the first few results. And it’s not just Wikipedia. Coding questions don’t return results as good. Info on products can be harder to find. Something shifted. Some of it is indeed that a lot more activity is on these locked off sites, but it’s not the whole story. Something fundamental changed
I was wondering if this may not be googles fault. I think there has been a shift in the past 5 years on how people interact with the web that may not gel with the previous search paradigm.
It sucks because they're redirecting you to the worst possible sites because those are the ones running the most ads, which Google is getting a cut from
That may be one factor, but a bigger factor is that many low quality websites are SEOed and keyworded to death, which games the search algorithm. The algorithm might need an update to get around that gaming.
Search links to digital media companies and the writers are terrible with no logic or reasoning skills.

Why doesn't OpenAI offshore and reduce expense by 80%
Google is losing out because for most search not related to academic work, watching a short, concise video (for example on how to change a tire or cook an omelette) is usually more efficient and pleasurable than digging through articles on ugly webpages filled with ads and annoying pop-ups, “accept cookie” banners, and etc.
