Horrible Netflix ML interview experience
Hello everyone, I work for Google as a SWE in EMEA. I like my work, managers and colleagues are smart and friendly. I have some room for career growth. WLB is great. I was however recently toying with the idea of joining a hedge fund because they are generally very smart people too and pay really really well. I know I might sacrifice a bit of WLB but I'm in my twenties and don't have many constraints and have a ton of energy and time Should I join a hedge fund, make a lot of savings and retire early? Or is that a short sighted view? TC=100k #software #engineering #software #swe #google #finance #trading
Don’t sell your soul, big finance is super soul draining. On your death bed you will regret going into finance.
Tbh while it is nice to work at company that does cool things, I'm just a cog in a huge machine. It feels like a lot of people here are in for themselves (promo, etc) here anyway. Why not just get a little ahead in this rat race?
Just be careful. I would set your expectations very low. Came from FAANG to here and the industry is very different. Culture here is also something I haven't experienced anywhere else. Very strict and they pick on every single small details. But if you get used to it, it's all good.
Thanks for your insights. Could you please share a few examples? Are you otherwise happy with this choice?
The only reason I'm staying put is because of TC and prestige. The work we do at HFT is not god's work. We're not improving the society as much compared to google. I don't see myself working here forever. Examples: monitoring your laptop to highest degree, travel restrictions, personal and family finance disclosure etc there are so many
Do the interviews and make a decision if you get an offer. The finance companies that are worth going to over Google are not easy to land.
This - be very cautious of the kind of companies eager to take you without *relevant* experience. I’m a former trader. SWE are second-class at financial firms, so unless you bring relevant knowledge be prepared to be treated as such.
Thanks for the advice! What do you think counts as "relevant experience" here?
