Google vs Facebook Internship

Having a tough time deciding between 2020 internship offers at Google and Facebook. Currently in the host matching process for Google, but I'm unofficially talking to a few teams that are interested in me (we haven't gone though the official host match process since they haven't gotten intern approval yet). I don't have a confirmed offer until I match with a team though. Facebook I have a guaranteed offer that I'm allowed to move around to the spring/fall school term if I want. Deciding between turning down Facebook to risk it for Google, sticking safe with Facebook and turning down Google, or taking both (one off season). The last option would delay my graduation by a semester. Google TC: 7500/month + 9k housing overall Facebook TC: 8k/month + 1.6k housing/month post tax

Not to scare you away but I have heard soooo many stories of interns not getting a host match after believing they had a google offer...

IMHO a one semester delay is not too much to be able to say that you worked at both Google and Facebook

I wouldn't turn down Facebook before you have a Google offer. But maybe you could tell Google you have a competing offer and ask to expedite the process.

Unfortunately looks like most summer hosts haven't been given approval yet, so speeding up Google is near impossible.

Do both! It's so valuable to have internship experience - you get to try on different companies and choose which one you like. Nothing like this exists once you start full time. Google and fb have pretty different cultures. Delaying school by a semester is not a big deal. With all the extra income you'll make that will probably pay for the semester in fact. You could even walk away with multiple full time offers and use those to compete against each other.

Just something to consider: 1. Being in the host matching process doesn’t guarantee an offer. I’ve learned that lesson many times during my undergrad and PhD. 2. Most interns get a return offer from Facebook and it’s solely based on your internship performance, whereas at Google you will need to go through 2+ additional interviews after your internship and still I heard only about 50% (?) will get a return offer. 3. The full-time packages for interns at Facebook are very competitive. Google tends to lowball people these days.

Internship at Google or Facebook puts equal “prestige” on your resume, so pick either one is fine. Younger people tend to choose Facebook over Google. Facebook has better perks. Yeah, Google full time conversion involves more, but you can get both Facebook and Google intern offers, I don’t think this is a problem for you. :)

If you can do both you should. I made this same decision a few years ago, but I wasn’t able to do both. I ended up choosing fb because I knew that if I did well I would walk away from it with a job offer; couldn’t say the same about Google. To each his own, but my advice is that if you can do both you should, whereas if you have to choose only one then choose fb because having at least one job offer from anywhere will make your life dramatically easier when you start interviewing for full time roles.
