I recently joined Google India as L4 role. I have admit for Masters in CS from NYU Courant. Could someone please tell me what are the pros and cons of leaving Google India for Masters? yoe: 5 tc: 34lpa(base) + 18lpa(RSU)
In the two years it takes to get a Masters degree, you’d have earned eligibility to move to the US on L1 visa through Google. Internal mobility is surprisingly easy here. You also save on the cost that it takes for Masters, plus you’d have a chance at L5. Going for masters would reset that career progression completely. I’d pick masters only if you’re craving college experience. Don’t expect to learn anything drastically different in Masters. My 2 cents.
Yeah I was thinking the same. Thanks
what would mobility be like for a US citizen full time google employee who would want to move to Zurich?
Try to move on L1, your future wife can also work on L2 visa or H4 EAD if u get H1b.
No brainer, stay put. Experience is far better than Masters. You can educate yourself where ever you are though..
Masters is done for US visa, not for education
^lol no. It’s useful if you’re moving fields and specializing in something.
bruh Stay in Google unless you really really want the masters. Financial/career growth perspective — G is better.
What is your reason to do masters?
Thought if it could help me get into research field
Then why not apply for PhD? Masters degree won't help much since you probably won't have the time to do quality research.
It would be great if you could share the decision you take eventually..and on what basis..for people facing a similar dilemma..thanks😅
Choosing G because poll 😅 well I think career growth would be better if I stay in G as I am already 5y exp. As I want to try some research experience, ppl saying masters won't help much, and PhD is too long which I believe would make me lose my motivation so I am playing safer bet I guess
Thank you for replying! And all the best 😃
What's your position at Adobe OP?
Let me give you another perspective. With Masters you can work in any company. You can get multiple offers and choose the best one. I have seen people get 100k more than what some with L1 is getting for the same position until the person get H1B. Could be 1/2/3 yrs. In that time, someone with OPT/H1B will get 100k-300k more than some one with L1(assuming the TC doesn’t change). Lets take 200k as that amount. For MS, it takes 60k for the whole program + loss in yearly income.(you can take the summer semester and complete the MS in an year for 30 credit course) after that you can directly join SDE2 instead of SDE1 or starting over as other people are saying. I have many example to show that. Even you can get senior depending on how much you have the right attitude. Also, an extra masters degree helps a lot if you want to be more ambitious with startups and research. I would suggest not thinking short term. You know that most people supposed to stop developing after L5 right. So getting there 1-2 yrs late is fine as compared to one time Masters. BTW, I am also 4.5 yoe working at some other company and getting double of what you are getting. I am going for the MS. Only difference between you and me is that you are working at Google which has better internal mobility. Have you seen the intake of sde at google india this year? they almost tripled in numbers. More people, More choices for HM, More competition. Good luck with whatever you choose.
Sorry if I am late. How to find good courses within 1.5 year. Also for stem extension shouldn't it be >1.5 years long?
Hey Microsoft, mind if I DM you. I have 3YEO and thinking of masters. I wanted some info on the possibility of joining at SDE2 post masters.
The only drawbacks of choosing to stay at Google is, you will not get a high earning wife in India and your children won't be US citizens.
