Sometimes I work past 5 because I want to. My teammates say I “MUST” not work after 5 for 2 reasons: 1. If I work past 5, means I cannot finish work on time. Promotion is evaluated on my ability to execute within work hours 2. If I work past 5 and produces good results, it gives false rewarding perception that others should work past 5 too. This promotes bad culture. But bro!! I want to just work 30 more minutes to wrap things up. I want to work just for a bit more but Google is actively blocking me to work more. Very weird, but I guess good..?
You have to get your work done in time or else Google will end up making other people work more.
Cool story.
Bro, I don’t know about point 1, that may be internal to your company but point 2 is spot on. The offices should be empty and people should be offline by 5. This reinforces that the day has officially ended.
Nah, it’s bs. The idea is you should be able to work whenever you want as long as you’re not bothering other people with your hours. We had a guy that showed up after 11 every day, but he stayed later. Sometimes people have other stuff going on in their lives.
Ever wonder why EU salaries suck compared to the US?
Good for employees who are just collecting paychecks and looking for wlb. Bad for the long term prospect of the company if it is true. I never worked at google but I would assume this kind of thing would be very department specific. I can’t imagine folks on the new product side would work till only 5.
Team specific. My former team didn’t give af
Which team ? Could pls share ? I have been escalating that our team is working all the time with no boundary and the culture is so bad.. could you DM the team or org pls ?
Dmed
DMed you OP.
Dinner at google starts at 6:30. Do they expect you to sit around doing nothing for an hour and a half?
You’re supposed to go to the gym and play ping pong
You have to take dinner at Google itself? Is that a rule? Like in some countries people have to go after hours with their boss and colleagues for drinks etc and it's mandatory.
Which org? Personally i feel that people should be free to choose their hours
They have a point. If you are working past work hours, you are selling yourself short. And dragging everyone else with you.
How’s that their business
See the part about dragging everyone down.
It’s not Google. It’s your delusional teammates. Do what suits your career best
