TL;DR Refunded an empty box to incur addition shipping cost but got fully refunded. Full Story: About a year ago, I was shopping for glasses on eyeconic (owned by vsp which is offered by my employer). They put some ridiculous prices on their website but when you enter your insurance details it gives you huge discount to make you think you are getting a really good deal (the initial prices are over-priced). The funny thing is that the frame (compared to the lenses) tend to have a huge impact on the price maybe even more than 50% of the price. I was trying to buy this luxury Italian brand frames. The total was about 450$ after insurance 150$. The item arrives and I see a big "made in China" on the frame. This pisses me off. Try to write a bad review, they don't accept my review. I get even more pissed off. Come up with a plan. What I thought that will happen: I decided to request a return for a refund but my plan was to return the empty box. I thought by doing this I won't get a refund but at least incur an additional 20$ cost on them and lower their profit margins. What actually happened: My refund process gets initiated as soon as the package gets scanned at Fedex and I got refunded before the package arrives to the destination. A few days later I received a phone call from them (did not answer it and it went to voice mail), that the box was empty and they couldn't process my refund and I should call them. I did not call them or talked with them ever. I was thinking that they would probably charge my card back, since they had my card info. A few days later I received a mail from them saying that they had refunded my insurance plan for 300$ and now I essentially owed them the full 450$. This pissed me off and I also got scared that they would charge my card for 450$. So I immediately reported my card stolen so my old card info got frozen. Eventually nothing happened. I was not charged neither in terms of money nor legally. I was wondering whether this can show up in some database when they are doing a background check on me?
Tldr?
Added. Retuned empty box to incur additional cost but got fully refunded. Now they wanted their money back but not the post insurance 150$ but the scammy 450$ price. So I ignored them.
I did not ask for an essay. Answer with fewer words 😆
That’s called stealing in simple words.
Yeah that was not my intention, turned out to be that way. and once initiated there was no going back. They would have charged me for 450$. Because of their shady pricing.
It’s America, companies have a right to charge whatever they want. If you think the price is wrong go to other companies.
You know glasses cost like $5 to make, right? You did all that for $15 equivalent on Zenni optical. Congrats, I guess?
Well also consider the two shipping each 20$. I suspected their so cheap and 450$ and even 150$ is just them scamming us.
It probably went to collections.
Well in 1 year if it had gone to the collection it should have shown in my credit report right?
You were intending to fraud the company. You’re a crook. Plain and simple. If I knew this I wouldn’t hire you at all. It’s the little white lies and intentions behind them that matter here. Just because you don’t agree with how someone runs their business does not give you authority to use their own policies against them. That’s fraud. Passive aggressive tactics that involve a financial loss even 1¢ is fraud. You can’t ever work in finance, insurance, or federal government if you actually were to get caught. Grow some balls you prepubescent adult.
I just wanted to bring down their profit margins by 20$. Also the company is crook. The insurance company has full control on the pricing, they own the shop. Lots of shady stuff going on with that company and vsp, in general. Would not feel bad about screwing them up.
Why didn't you just return the glasses instead of trying to teach the vendor a lesson? It doesn't care Next time buy from Costco that also carries designer frames.
I did not return the glasses because I did not necessarily think 150$ is a lot of money even though it was a Chinese frame. Yeah tried to teach them a lesson but it played out in a different way.
Thank you! This hack shall be exploited soon.
I hope more people did this so they did go out of business. But for some reason people here like corporate overlords, they have Stockholm syndrome.
It is not fraud, until proven in the court and it is a very difficult thing to prove. Especially in this case they also made a mistake of refunding too early. That is not usually how things are done. Even their policy states they do an inspection and then a refund. So they broke their own policy.
Can't believe these are my coworkers. They pride themselves on getting some cheap ass glasses by commiting fraud

I did not know this will happen, if you read I have written what I thought that will happen. But it played out in a different way. And of course I was no going to pay them 450$.
