Got scammed $20k on imposter website - what to do next?

We thought we were buying from Joy Drive (joydrive.com), a startup and a legit company but instead we wired money to joy-drive.com. Wired a $20k deposit and the car was supposed to arrive today and the “driver” is not picking up the phone. Talked to the real JoyDrive people who said the company is aware and their legal team is doing their best to take them down. Husband just went to our bank that we wired from (chase) to see if we can reverse the wire. What else to do next? The two websites are SO identical and why isn’t it taken down already? Summary of the scam: https://www.6post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1754971 JoyDrive.com Joy-drive.com (fake)

You’re probably sol but best to also contact law enforcement if you haven’t already

I’m sorry this happened to you. In the US, wiring money is uncommon. I know it’s very common in many parts of the world, and I think that’s what these kind of scammers are hoping for. No legitimate business in the US will ask you to wire money. If you or Chase hasn’t already, file a fraud report. That’s the best way to protect yourself. They can advise you on next steps. Get a new bank account number, new cards, the works. It’s a hassle, but you don’t want this coming back again. Contact the credit agencies as well. Or sign up with a service to watch your credit and money outflow. Again, I’m sorry this happened to you.

Thank you! Done! My husband is a born and raised American but we’ve been doing a lot of online money transactions lately with a home purchase and refinances and overlooked

Facebook wooshie OP Sep 15, 2020

How does one “contact FBI”?

Google Dooogle Sep 15, 2020

Damn, that's horrible. The two websites do look identical at first glance.

Sorry to hear about your loss. To get your money back you most probably need to go through the police/courts. There is a concept of payment finality in the financial system. Even Citibank has to go to court to try to get its 174 mil back. https://www.aier.org/article/citibanks-900-million-mistake-and-the-finality-of-payments/

Thank you!

Quick update in case anyone’s interested: - went to chase branch who will “try” to reverse wire, but honestly dont high hopes. Filed a fraud thing with Chase. - filed complaint with FBI and local police online - talked to a couple lawyers via fb legal help who said “sorry but don’t think many would take this on contingency basis” which makes sense - found CEO’s personal email via friends in banking/VC - still polite but asking what they’d do bc they can do better in taking down imposters. Next step is CC’ing all investors and board members, based on his response. - now time to drink. 😭 😭

Maintaining your digital safety is paramount in this day and age where lot of our valuables are virtual. Awareness of and how to prevent falling victim to phishing and SIM swap scams and others like it is very important. For example, did you know to prevent SIM swap scams you have to set a PIN with your cellular network provider? By default it is not set! If you haven’t done it, find out how to and set the PIN. This is because most banks still use SMS based two factor authentication which is not secure. Also needless to say, use a password manager.
