Green card or PR (edited)

How many years (approx) does it take for an Indian to get a green card or PR at this point of time if he/she does a PHD(in DataScience) in USA? #tech #PR #PHD Any idea of how much difference in time does it make while applying for PR if I do PHD? ( H1B vs EB1 vs EB2 estimated time for the process of getting a PR)

It depends , most companies including faang have limited slots for eb1 and they usually fit you in eb2

If the person fits into eb2, how many years (approx) from then might it take for processing?

It sounds like EB2 so check here: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/legal/visa-law0/visa-bulletin/2020/visa-bulletin-for-january-2020.html Looking at the latest bulletin it would take 10-11 years.

😱😱 I thought with PHD, U could get a PR in 5-6 years... So, this 10-11 years generally includes OPT, H1B and Green card processing? Or can u directly apply for green card while u r in OPT/STEM OPT?

The waiting time is not linear. From application for gc to gc it is 45 years.

Go to Canada

The current time for EB1 is 4-5 years and this will likely go up. Also, the job you do will need to qualify as an EB1 job for the employer to file it as such. You will need to have a bunch of citations and most companies will still apply for your green card in EB2.

FINRA Good Boy OP Jan 6, 2020

So, on EB2, Do u have an idea of how long it might take?

Expedia Group FRFe41 Jan 6, 2020

It will take 50+ years. I am not joking!! Feel free to check the Visa bulletin. People who applied in 2009 are still waiting for their green card. We applied in 2015 and have no hope of getting it in our lifetime and our planning our move to Canada.

Also, green card is the same as PR in the US unless I am missing something in your post.

OP, as someone already pointed out, GC timeframe is not linear. Just because someone that applied in 2009 got their GC now, doesn't mean the wait time is 13 years. The explosive growth of Indian immigration happened after 2009 and going by the number of GCs given out every year, EB2 wait time is around 50+ years. From the Visa bulletin of Jan 2019, APR'09 dates were current for EB2. In Jan 2020, the bulletin says the current dates are MAY'09. So in one year, the priority date moved by just 1 month. The one year progression is worse for EB1 and EB3. It went back almost by 2 years for EB1 and 2 months for EB3.

Thank u for giving me a clarity of how the process is working currently..
