Hello, I received an initial offer from grubhub for SDE2 position. Just wondering if it makes sense to join them with the current market situation. I know they've been losing market share and their business decisions seem to be playing catch up with the competitors with all their partnerships. They are profitable though. At amazon currently I don't like the work i'm doing but I feel a little more secure wrt layoffs. Waiting for things to open so I can switch internally. I'm wondering if I should negotiate for more and accept if they agree to my numbers or reject GH and wait it out at Amazon and switch internally/externally later. TC: 200k new TC: 210k #grubhub #offer #SDE2
If grub is yet to have a layoff, they might likely have one. At this point I personally wouldn’t risk switching.
We lost some 30% of employees (> 1000 devs in 2019 down to 700) over the past 2 years and never replenished much of our workforce, so hopefully that doesn’t happen. 4 out of 11 devs quit on my team and we’ve added 0 thus far, since before our hiring freeze in August.
GH folks, i'd appreciate your input wrt the general sentiment of people within the company. Has leadership re-assured y'all in anyway that there'll be no mass layoffs?
We never went on a hiring spree like other big techs, and lost a good chunk of our devs over the past 18 months, 30% of which are seniors & above. We’ve just recently started hiring for backfills. Hopefully that puts us in a better position to navigate through tough times. On a side note, we likely won’t budge on numbers especially for remote positions.
Thanks for the insight! :)
Based on your current numbers I’m guessing you’re SDE 1 at Amazon? Stick it out and get promoted to SDE 2. Grubhub stack is subpar and your TC improvement is not even good. You won’t even see the difference since daddy 🇺🇸 will take away a solid chunk. Amazon is also a very well run business for the most part. You can switch teams, in a normal environment, and do work that actually excites you. You will not have that opportunity at Grubhub. Grind it out and try to get promoted to SDE2. It will be a bigger bump than your Grubhub offer.
That’s some great advice. Thanks 😊
Feel free to DM. I’m ex Amazon and know the ins and out of Grubhub
yoe? BS or MS ?
I honestly wouldn’t leave for grub hub, especially for a negligible comp increase. Internal mobility is one of the best things about Amazon imo - granted, no idea when the freeze will be lifted, but I easily found a great team this way.
for 10k you’re seriously considering swapping??
Nope, only if they agree to my numbers. But my questions was more assuming that they did, is it worth it even then?
I mean tbh if it’s substantial enough of a raise I say go for it. Isn’t it relatively common for people to be able to boomerang back to Amazon
Even less money is worth leaving this shit hole
Grubhub is hiring and is profitable. Dont join the PIP factory
is grub hub remote or would you work out of the Chicago office?
They’re open to remote
CTO is strongly against it.
