H1 to H4 transfer time and H4 EAD processing time
I’m on an H1B that is expiring without an approved I-140. If I switch to H4 how long will this take? Can I choose to switch to H4 only when H4 EAD gets approved?

12-18 months. H4 COS takes around 8 months and then EAD takes another 8 months.
You could file both of them concurrently and they will be approved together. Its taking almost 10months or more these days.
You can file concurrently but, EAD will only be processed after H4 COS is processed. Even after removal of the biometrics, I see no change in processing times. For me without biometrics- it took 8 months just for EAD.
You can file h4 and h4ead to start from a future date. Currently hearing almost a year wait time for h4 ead, so if you can be on h1 for a year, then you should be good.
Don't think you can even get H4 EAD w/o having H4 in the beginning
