Just a question not an opinion. H1B was meant to address shortages. But those shortages have disappeared and now thousands of citizens and greencard holders are out of work. Still H1Bs are being issued business as usual. Should this be paused while US workers are still jobless? TC 350k
nah, i prefer working with immigrants
Is it because you get promoted over them? Just curious?
Immigrants are more motivated with that carrot in front of face.
H1B visa holders go through a process where the employer has to prove that they were not able to find a qualified citizen to fill that role. If you think that is not working well, Congress should strengthen that process rather than fixing the symptom of immigrants taking jobs that perhaps unemployed Americans could've taken. Immigrants play an important role in filling jobs that not enough American citizens are able to fill, so trying to get rid of that program hurts us more than it helps. We just need to tighten the checks & balances in existing process instead.
Right. So pausing or stopping H1B doesn't seem like a solution, but an over reaction to the problem. Petition your congressman to fix the real problem -- that the labor certification process seems to have loopholes that don't serve the original intent.
There is nothing needed to "proof" there is no qualified citizen for H1B allowed job. H1B LCA is not PERM LC. Ideally it should be like PERM, but it takes time. Lets scrap H1B for two years and see how much US economy suffered. I bet nothing is going to happen if we loose immigrants.. maybe cost to company may increase
There’s still shortage in certain job segments. Just because unemployment rate is high does not mean all job openings can be filled.
Unemployment rate is a joke. Maybe for very specific skills but for most roles probably not
I’m sure there aren’t enough SDEs to fill openings which is majority of blinders
More people would be out of work without the fees that US gets through these visa applications.
hahaaha what kind of backward logic is that? The fee is only $2500 you make it sound like it is a full salary.
@baQm43, 85000 h1b visas are issued every year, 85000×2500 = $212.5 M Lawyer fees: 85000×3000 = $255M Visa needs to be renewed every 3 years, need to attend visa interview On average 500k H1B renew their H1B's 500k× 2500 = $1.25B in fees alone Now add the visa fees for visitor visas, spousal visas, international students visas, work status applications you would be around $10billion. Now go laugh at your joke
I think all us citizens should start tech companies and hire h1bs. It is a Win win
Who’s going to fund us lazy americans though? Let the immigrants come and build our nation for us
Let’s stop the international students and f1 visas as well ? US students can fill all the seats in universities.
International students are a cash cow for any university
Oh I watch Fox News and I think these universities will be fine without these foren students and their money. My grandson is so talented, he will get his college education from these universities if these immigrants were not using those seats
The problem is not h1bs tech companies are too big it is a monopoly there just aren’t enough jobs. Because one company doesn’t need so many employees. Thus, the layoffs.
So throwing people out, will lead to less grocery sales, lesser housing, will accelerate the recession and essential services like doctors will go missing. How is this hard to understand? Who benefits from throwing out the most educated and some of the wealthy and hardworking people from the country? It's not a zero sum game. There are enough jobs out there. For example how many here are ready to work at hcl, tcs or Infosys or forget that even in CVS tech or Walgreens etc. Not every developer needs to be paid a million dollars. All other people will suffer. At worst they should increase the price of their services and inflation happens. Skilled immigration should be red carpeted , but sad the way the opinion is even from those supposedly educated
Ehh we need housing prices to go down and the doctor crises that is occurring is because we already don't accept immigrant doctors. We have plenty of Americans that want to be doctors but our residency system is fucked and causing massive bottlenecks.
Yea it's nice for you have to have 100k houses to buy(whereas your house is alone 1 million) 1 million tc work from home everything, I don't deny. But it doesn't work like that. Market balances itself out and extended recession is catastrophic. Where are the plenty of doctors? 100 or 500 is not enough. Gatekeeping is good maybe for those doctors tc but not for population. Similar with sde America has 200,000 or more opening for sde? Are there enough qualified candidates to fill all those positions? It's not like there are only 1 sde position. You don't want America to remain a superpower in tech? You want some other country to take over? Whether you agree or not h1b is going to be expanded and not reduced.... there is a bill to exempt h1b for doctors... I have enough friends in the medical industry and all they tell me is now they are finding it very hard to find nurses and doctors.... What is the problem with skilled people. I understand concerns about undocumented immigration? How is it hard to understand as an educated person? You don't want 80k skilled people coming every year? What's your reasoning? You are willing to take up CVS or Walgreens sde role?
How many with a bachelor's degree and have experience as sde are ready to work for 80k dollars?
Yes we should replace working people on visa with laid off US citizens
Ok so incompetent citizens first and capable immigrants later
Competence is subjective. Sure some can solve math /leetcode problems faster but that too is a learnable skill in the long run.
