Harassment in the workplace

“A recent data analysis by the Pew Research Center found that women experience such slights at nearly three times the rate men do at work. Sixteen percent of women — and 29 percent of women with advanced degrees — said they had received repeated, small slights at work, compared with just 5 percent of men. Twenty-three percent of women said they felt they had been treated as if they were not competent, compared with just 6 percent of men.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/on-leadership/wp/2018/01/05/sexual-harassment-inc-how-the-metoo-movement-is-sparking-a-wave-of-startups/

How much of this delta is due to a difference in perception? A man and woman could be given the same criticisms on their past year with a company, verbatim, and there would be enough difference to be worth mentioning. Just ask them one question: “Could you paraphrase the feedback you received in your annual review?” I have enough confidence this would occur that you’d start to see this disparity OP mentions in a sample size as small as 10 M/F sample pairs on up.

Women are treated differently and spoken to differently at work. I don’t have specific numbers to provide, but I’m going by what I have witnessed. At Uber and at previous companies, the way I have been spoken to is in a different tone than many of my female coworkers. It’s like a condescending tone, and I don’t know if a lot of guys even realize they are doing it, but they are doing it. It’s comparable to how people may speak to a little kid, or someone who you aren’t sure can handle what you’re asking them to do. If someone spoke down to me like that, I’d be so fucking pissed. But they don’t, and the only reason I can come up with is because I’m a guy.

If she gets pissed then she’s a bitch. He on the other hand is assertive or showing leadership qualities.

Yawn.

Not really experienced harassment. But a lot of low profile individuals are getting hired with ‘women in tech’. Asking for same salary is senseless. If you are an individual with good record you get good pay!.
