If I start my career in hardware product management (semiconductors, routers, switches) how hard is it to switch to software PM (Snapchat, Salesforce, Instagram)? Is it a totally different skillset for each?
The first switch is the hardest! I did it. From core hardware to AI/ML at a FAANG. It’s usually the FAANG companies that are more open to it. They focus on your product skills and product thinking rather than your industry skills. It’s all about interview prep and a ton of reading about SW product management. It can take a bit longer but definitely doable
Could you elaborate a bit more? How are you finding the PM gig? Did your reading alone prepare you for it?
Hi Cisco, I am experienced hardware PM, mainly been in semiconductors. I have been preparing a lot for FAANG interviews and had 6 unsuccessful intervirws with FAANG. Any tips besides reading the basic PM books that everyone suggests?

People who like Modi, are you okay with your country’s leader using words like “infiltrators” for a community?
Yes, it is. Not only is the tech obviously different, the business models are very different, there is no procurement or supply chain to be really concerned about, and your end customers are typically different as well.
