Almost all visa holder friends I know at Shopify got laid off I’m confused
Because you are visa holder? So your network is mostly visa holder.
Probably laid off more US workers as they are the most expensive. And most US tech workers are visa holders.
No there’re visa holders left.
What’s the confusion?
They’re gone, along with most German employees who were attempting to form a union. Should have listened to dhenend
Shopify laid off staff so they could bring in Temporary Foreign Workers for less, and they got caught doing so...
They can’t bring temporary workers after a layoff. They will have to prove to the government that they can’t find a candidate among Permanent Residents and Citizens You can’t prove it if you just laid off a bunch of these
A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that an employer in Canada may need to get before hiring a foreign worker. A positive LMIA will show that there is a need for a foreign worker to fill the job. It will also show that no Canadian worker or permanent resident is available to do the job.
I’m a visa holder and did not get laid off. But my visa is not sponsored by Shopify
Visa holder and was axed
What benefit is there for the company to fire visa holders?
No need to pay lawyers to extend it but it costs nothing compared to the value employee brings to the company
Not the case in Europe where you don't need lawyers to extend visas.
