I was among those whose role was eliminated on 7/10/23. I'm a L64 people manager under the PM umbrella of professions. YOE 27 (11 at Microsoft); TC $250K, more or less. Soon to be $0. I'm going to make a polite and professional request for more severance than the default offer. Has anyone here ever been successful with that at Microsoft? If so, please elaborate in the comments. Thank you! #severance #layoff #microsoft
What leverage do you plan on using to negotiate?
A reasonable question, but I'd prefer not to say too much here lest it reveal too much about me or allow any lurkers from Microsoft HR to connect this thread to my request. I think I have some good reasons — but of course that doesn't mean Microsoft will agree.
He can tell them that he has a competing severance offer from Meta.
If you have a valid reason run it by an employment lawyer, most big company terminations and offers are usually hard to negotiate with
I never understood how someone “negotiates” severance. You have no leverage .. they don’t want you there anymore “If you don’t give me more severance I’ll quit” wut
California employment lawyer here. Your negotiation needs to be tethered to a particular legal theory. And that theory needs to be well developed. It sounds like you should speak with an attorney.
Thanks for sharing this opinion. The dilemma of course is whether to spend some of the limited money I have available to get me through to my next job on an attorney if the odds are low. Would you be willing to share a short list of what some plausible legal theories might be?
Also don’t forget. Microsoft has a pretty deep legal bench.
Op, any updates on your end or insight?
