I have an offer from Apple in Cupertino but I really like my job, nature of work, boss and group at Intel. A part of me wants to stay at intel because it is fully remote , and highly flexible. The work is also cutting-edge . Finances aside , do you think it makes sense for me to stay at Intel? If you can give reasons of why I should or should not leave that would be greatly appreciated. If you were in a similar situation what would you do?
How big is the TC bump ar Apple? Take into consideration taxes and HCOL expenses and do comparison of take home income.
Thanks . People suggest that I will be more valuable if I have Apple on my resume and that other don’t value intel engineers. My interview experience gave me a different impression. I felt that they valued intel’s engineers and were curious why I would want to leave such a “successful career” to join their company?
Apple has a Portland office if you don’t want to move , you may be able to work there.
Better for your resume for sure. What is the role at apple - can play a big role. You’ll need to be in the office 3x/week.
It is hardware role
I’m in hardware; it’s a hard grind. No WLB in my group.
Apple culture is toxic. Wish I would of not jump. Even for the TC increase.
Can you please elaborate on the toxic culture? Can you please give a couple of examples ?
Currently working 10hr+ days and when we ran out of time for meeting our director started adding them at lunch. Every decision, and I mean every one, needs to get approval by manager, sr manager, director, and VP. Each one of them will ask you questions to trip you up and not to actual solve the problem just to show their own intelligence. Apple Park offices layout is stressful. The layout makes you feel like you can’t make any noise. Then because you are siloed to your own group you can’t connect easily with cross functional teams to solve issues quickly. We treat our suppliers like second class humans. Forcing them to drop everything to do the most mundane tasks and escalating immediately to their companies leadership over tiny concerns. We’ve had companies fire people on multiple occasions over nothing. Just a couple that come to mind. The upside is I make more than I had ever dreamed of making and got promoted to ICT5 so that could look good on a future resume.
Apple may experience a lot more pressure to move out of China and it will be tough to accomplish. On the other hand, Intel may have seen the bottom.
I see what you meant there . If intel nose dives further there has to be other companies which will have a place for me if Apple does not give me a chance again? Am I wrong in assuming this ?
Not wrong at all. I’ve actually invested in Intel recently as I’m pretty optimistic about their mid term future.
You don't grow if you are too comfortable. Plus Portland sucks. What is the apple TC?
I have been allowed to be fully remote. I can work from anywhere while being at intel. Work at intel is challenging and cutting edge but the atmosphere of our org is from haven due to a lot of factors
I think you should consider writing your personal pros and cons. This helped me cuz I am in the exact same situation as you. Personally I am making the switch. I am bored at intel plus other factors. Whenever I get second thoughts I look at the list again. Are you willing to share yours TC details?
good discussion! I value culture, wlb more than money. hopefully intc stk will go up soon :). intel culture has helped take care of my kids in a very positive way, they are doing exceptionally well in school and otherwise and are ready to go to very good colleges. thankful to intel to be able to spend time with them rather than just making money
Just go. Make as much money
What led you to interview in the first place?
5% intel wide pay cut. And I wanted to move out of Portland. Intel has given me formal permission to be fully remote
Got it. I would stay at intel in your shoes because I value the things you mention (good work, boss, etc) more highly than 5% of my pay, and I also know they are HARD to find at the same time. But only you can answer that question for yourself…
