Can Someone explain Red Hat and Linux to me like I’m 5? I’m a non-tech techie (marketer) and trying to do research for Red Hat for an interview. But the intro YouTube vids about Red Hat are kinda over my head so I’m in need of a more elementary starting point. Any pointers on resources would be great as well. Please go easy on me 😬😅 Edit: Had my interview today- and the explanations were super helpful in giving me the context to do more research on Red Hat. Just finished up my interview earlier today- think it went well! Thanks Blind fam for coming in clutch! TC 0 (interviewing) YOE 3+ #tech #advice #redhat
Google is your friend.
Are you looking for an explanation from a marketing perspective? Red Hat is the commercial version of CentOS + Fedora. Benefits being security patches, stability, and support vs fully open source. Open source means they’re maintained and developed by the community, and they’re free to use, although certain uses may require a license. Linux itself is an operating system based off of UNIX. There are several different flavors, the majority of them open source (Ubuntu is another popular one). Linux is usually a command line interface but you can install a desktop environment like Gnome and have a GUI (graphic user interface) much like Mac or Windows.
Throwing more jargons, centOS fedora 🤦

Sure! Linux is an operating system, which is like the brain of your computer. It manages all the resources and lets you run different programs and apps. The unique thing about Linux is that it's open-source, meaning its code is freely available for everyone to see, use, and modify. This allows people from all over the world to collaborate and improve it together. Red Hat is a company that takes Linux and adds its own special touches to make it even better and more reliable for businesses and organizations. They offer a version of Linux that comes with extra support, security, and management tools, making it more suitable for professional use. So, Linux is the core system that anyone can use and modify, and Red Hat is a company that takes Linux and enhances it, making it a more polished and supported option for businesses and organizations. So this explains Linux vs. Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Red Hat uses this model to create enterprise-ready open source technology. I recommend Google imagining “open source projects to Red Hat”. You can see more examples mapping open source projects to Red Hat software. Red Hat takes open source community projects which anyone can contribute code to, Red Hat forks off the project (pulls out a version) and makes it more stable and supports it for enterprise use…then sells it. Red Hat is more than just RHEL (their flavor of Linux). But take the example in the post above and repeat for other technology beyond an operating system.
@RBC This is a really good explanation, I appreciate it and @Apple thanks for the caveat I feel like I have a pretty good idea of how I would dig deeper

In most simple terms 🤝🤝🤝 Do u know windows from Microsoft, it is an operation system. But you cannot see the actual code of windows, as it is kept safe within Microsoft Red hat is same, its an operating system like windows, but it's code is publically available. Now what is Linux :: Operating system has a very important component called kernel, which is very hard to develop ( similar to human skeleton). Linux is a name of kernel whose code is publicly available for anyone to use So many people used Linux kernel directly and build their own operating system on top of it. Red hat, fedora, etc are those OS build on top of Linux kernel
@Amazon Oh ok, thanks great explanation! I see that explains the question in my mind of why a company would want to use something that’s open source instead of proprietary. Appreciate you meeting me where I’m at! 😊
Imagine you invented candy Great! The whole town knows it, the very first basic candy. It's a hit UNIX Now what!? Release a simple flavor, LINUX It will be a hit The whole town knows it is similar to the original Now, you ain't the only one who can make candy A complex candy flavor is out, Red Hat People love it! Better than the original they say! (followers rising) Yet another maker releases a new flavor, Ubuntu! The masses love it Repeat the story for other flavors, Suse, Debian, Fedora, etc. and each are their own specialty, but they're still candy and each have their following
Completely wrong example 👎 This candy examples is more confusing
😂 an explanation apt for a 5y old was unfathomable by you
