L4 Google -> 45 interviews, 5 offers, AMA
Currently Meta IC5 SWE, TC after stock crash: 🥜 Did 15 onsites for senior SWE positions and received 10 offers, but got downleveled by most of them. I'll follow up on a separate post with more details such as breakdowns/interviews after I've signed an offer. This is my personal ranking, and the reasons below: Stripe > Snap > Instacart ~ CashApp > Google > Pinterest > Amazon Stripe L2 - negotiated 370K TC + 50k signing bonus - Pros: very exciting team, high potential for career growth, great perks - Cons: wish I could negotiate TC more Snap L4 - 390k TC, still negotiating - Pros: great perks, high TC - Cons: not excited about team, seems hard to reach L5 Cash App (Block, Square) L5 - no numbers given yet (estimated 350k TC) - Pros: career growth opportunity, okay team - Cons: weak TC, NO FREE FOOD?? Instacart L5 - 400K TC + 40k signing bonus, room for negotiation - Pros: senior level scope and career growth opportunity - Cons: meh team, not excited about company Google L4 - no numbers given yet (estimated 350k TC) - Pros: good perks, okay team, has business class - Cons: seems boring, hard to reach L5, also my ex works there Pinterest L4 - no numbers given yet (estimated 300-350k TC) - Pros: good perks - Cons: not excited about company or product Amazon L5 - 290k avg TC over 4 years (325k 1st year), still negotiating - Pros: decent team - Cons: zero perks, seems very hard to reach L6 I also won't/can't consider these for various reasons: Asana L4 or L5 - no numbers, level, or team given (estimated 350-400k TC for L5) - Pros: highly rated company on all fronts - Cons: SF location Discord mid level - 250k TC - Pros: very exciting team and product - Cons: weak TC, SF location Series D startup ($x billion valuation), senior SWE - 450k TC - Pros: cool people and product - Cons: SF location, less known company Also in final rounds with Coinbase and TikTok, both of which have high TC but also significant WLB concerns. I ranked offers according to based on how they score in several areas that are important to me (TC, team/product, career growth opportunity, office benefits/perks, not horrible WLB) I'm really excited about Stripe, but the TC will be quite behind the others once I finish negotiating all of them. On the other hand, the next few choices just aren't as exciting of a product and team. Would love some additional perspectives that I might've missed. Update: signed with Stripe, passed TikTok coding rounds, still no update from coinbase
So you don’t fail an interview
Is IC5 == E5?
The official level is IC5. They stopped using E levels a few years ago but tenured employees continue to say them, just like how I say Facebook sometimes.
Why not stay?
Tbh I would say Stripe has no chance to go public for the next 4-5yrs. If you think it might go then Stripe is good offer. Else I would go with Cash App (in this economy)
Not particularly excited about Cash App's team though
You don’t know what you are talking about. Stripe is 1st in line for IPO - when environment around us returns to sanity.
Out of curiosity, do you have a CS degree?
what made you wonder that?
It sounds like you’re amazing at interviews! As a non-CS degree holder, If you don’t have a CS degree, I’d love to know your approach bc I constantly feel like I’m playing catch up
Can Pinterest go to 400k
I estimate numbers for offers I haven't gotten yet by taking the high end offers from levels fyi. I have enough competing offers that I should be able to negotiate them to that point.
Snap > google >= cash app > Amazon/Pinterest How was cash app LC difficulty? Easier than the others? Got an on-site tomorrow and v. nervous
why snap?
what's your reasoning for this ranking? cash app interviews were relatively easy
350k for Google 4???
Recruiter told me that's the highest they will be able to go with competing offers, of which I have many
My L4 friend got 416 first year but his recruiter needed to get like director approval for 400+. He has 4 YOE but he also got citadel which gave like 515k so maybe that was a factor?
Stripe and Instacart are overvalued. Don’t join Instacart as L5. Meta E5 can easily get L6 or even L7.
Maybe for a solid or strong Meta IC5. As you can see for me, I haven't been able to get an equivalent level offer at most of the companies I interviewed with. Instacart and the startup are the closest.
Instacart is giving inflated titles nowadays. I saw 2.5 yoe got L5 and 4 yoe got L6. What’s your yoe?
Not difficult to reach Amazon L6 these days.
hahahah I wish. amazon L6 behaviorals were the hardest I've ever been grilled in my life, so the downlevel to L5 came as no surprise
I was talking about internal promos. A couple years would be more than enough.
None of these tbh
Not that I have any more time to interview, but what would you have gone for if not those?
This guy is just a hater
