How big are the balls of Google to lay off thousands and then do 70 BILLION in stock buyback?
Hi Blind community, I am a current college senior graduating in May and was lucky to get 5 job offers and want some advice on making a decision. None of them are the faang+ that people here typically look for but for entry level they seem to be pretty decent overall. I'm coming from an EE background trying to break into software engineering for context. Wanted to see what y'all thought of the offers and which would you recommend. For context I am based out of central new Jersey from a regional state school. Offer 1: Company - General Motors Role - Software Engineer - Track Rotational Program Location - Detroit Michigan TC: 97K Offer 2: Company - AT&T Role - TDP Software Engineer Location - Middletown NJ TC: 110k Offer 3: Company - SRI International Role - Software Engineer Location - Princeton NJ TC: 90K Offer 4: Company - Lockheed Martin Role - Combat Systems Engineer Location - Moorestown NJ TC - 82K Offer 5: Company - PMG Digital Role - GLDP Software Engineer Location - Fort Worth TX TC - 68k #entry-level #engineering #software #swe #career #help

At LM you're likely to get a clearance, develop skills, and have a decent name on your resume. LM's benefits (4x10s, 10% retirement match), interesting work, and opportunity to get a clearance outweigh ATT IMO. I'm biased though, I like Lockheed and feel that ATT is a shit company in general. While layoffs exist everywhere, defense is fairly stable.
Do you know how RMS is in Moorestown? Was a bit concerned as my roommate is currently interning there and says it's pretty bad.
I second the security clearance opportunity. That opens all sorts of doors in the future. Depending on the work you do could make an easy opening for places like SpaceX also. Which will eventually IPO and millionaires will be made.
ATT is big enough that each org unit in it has a completely different feel. Agile or not, on call or not, new shit or old shit. Advancement comes heavily based on years with the company and not skill, so it is weighted very heavily towards people there for a decade or more.
TDP is a great program at AT&T
Were you in the tdp program by any chance. If so can I dm?
Only join AT&T if you are comfortable with the following: If you recognize a VP is not actively grooming you to be their little protege, then you start looking for new work immediately. TDPs turn out one of two ways: Promoted by politics or bottom rung with low TC and impact opportunities forever. Also recognize that you are likely to work on a team that has a low caliber of engineering or non software focused entirely.
Wow is the politics that extreme within the company?
Yes. The closer you get to HQ in Dallas the worse it gets.
Skip AT&T if at all possible. Your entry offer is pretty good, no future offers will be until you hit director, layoffs are CONSTANT. Seeing an average of 1+ per year in the company is common
Historically TDPs have been specifically excluded from those who can be laid off.
I have seen that as well, we laid off all our contractors we've had for years to save some TDPs
Your first salary sets you up for the rest of your life. You aren't saving the world in any of these jobs and unlikely to stay for very long so take the highest bidder for your skills
Gotcha thanks, I was planning on staying with the first job for only like 1-2 years. Do you think the brand name of GM vs AT&T make a difference or about the same?
None of these are luxury brand names so the latter
