I've been applying since Jan 1 (made a new year's resolution...) for DS jobs in Seattle/Bellevue/Redmond area and haven't had much luck. The recruiter calls I have had turned out to be exclusively Analyst in nature (despite the title) -- 90% data wrangling, dashboards, etc. I'm definitely not opposed to that being some of my workday but I really want to have part of the job be model-building and programming. Currently a Senior DS at the analytics arm of Kroger in the midwest, building lots of different models for lots of different client/internal use cases, developing Python packages for internal production, some A/B testing, etc. Lots of viz experience in Python too. Education: BS Math/Econ, MS Applied Math Tech: Python, Julia, Hadoop/Spark, SQL YOE: 4.5 Current TC: 118k #data #datascience #machinelearningengineer #machinelearning #refer #referral #help #seattle #bellevue #redmond #google #microsoft #twitter #dropbox #stripe #splunk #coinbase #square #zillow #paypal #slack #instacart #uber #lyft #trello #pinterest #airbnb #stitchfix #docusign #apple #spotify #atlassian #wayfair #tinder #okcupid #facebook #postmates #snap #tiktok #bytedance #adobe #datadog
Demand for DS is very low, most of the time companies want analyst kind of but then call them DS to attract applicants, the jobs are mostly building dashboard and some analytics as that is what many company needs, no fancy models or ML algos needed
I guess I'm just confused then -- if there's so little demand for ML/DS work why do so many (non-PhD) DS job descriptions include model-building in the duties and require knowing the theory?
Most jobs description are copy and paste from a template, they just include everything

Hi can I DM you for referral too? I’m a new grad if it matters
Your profile is not strong enough to get picked out for proper Data Scientist PA/ML roles. This is why you are only getting calls for PAs. Either focus on networking or based on your TC, take a PA role at a notable Bay Area company and up level in 1.5 years.
Hey buddy I have pinged you in dm can you take a look?
You can’t get as offers at Amazon? You are not as good as you think then
I just loving seeing people rushing into ml. And thinking ml modeling is so fun
Maybe its not fun at Apple ?
Too many candidates and you are not local

At big companies that's what being a DS is. I suggest you apply to smaller companies where a data scientist will handle a larger portion of the pipeline.
Wrong. At Oracle it is a lot more complex. What you are saying mostly applies to social media companies.
Oracle is wrong lol
