Hi all... So I recently went through a 6-8 week hiring process with Google for a user experience research role in NYC. I was flown to Mountain View for my in-person, on site, interviews, and I felt great about that while day of interviews. About a week after the on-site, my recruiter called and said that I had passed hiring committee! But here's where this gets weird... In the time it took to go through the whole interview process the position in NYC was filled. My recruiter said that the hiring committee's decision was good for a year, so I could just wait until something potentially opens up again in NYC, OR I could immediately start considering open positions in mountain view... But I'd have to relocate. Can anyone speak to how normal this is? Has anyone gone through this before where they actually waited a period of time after getting approved to find a role? Do you have any advice for me in my current situation? Anything at all from those on the inside would be great! Thank you!
Hey! I might be going through a user researcher interview at google too soon. Mind if I DM you a few questions about the process?
Sure! I'd be happy to answer what I can.
Thanks so much! I'll shoot you a dm :)
This happened to me when I got hired as a UX Researcher at Google. I passed hiring committee, then had to wait nearly 6 months until there was a team with an open position interested in me. I was a new grad then so I think most teams were looking for more experienced people. it sucked to be in limbo, but eventually worked out. I'd advise waiting a few months if you're not in a rush, and expect you would find another team in NYC.
This makes me feel so much better! Thanks for the response. It's SO weird being in this limbo state, like I can't celebrate getting through the process yet bc nothing has come of it. But anyway, it's super reassuring to hear someone else has been through it, and for a similar position!
Unfortunately ux researcher spots aren't that many, and with multiple candidates interviewing for the same spot this can happen. I'm with the rest, if you're ok with cali start asap. Once you're in the internal transfer process at Google is extremely easy, and after a but when something opens in NY you could move back.
It's common for Google. There are always more ops available at the mothership, so that's where they funnel talent that wasn't their first pick for the satellite office positions, and/or talent they want for the mothership. TAKE IT. Being in HQ always offers more career opportunities than being at a satellite.
Met another googler who spent months getting matched to a team after their interview. Google has notoriously long hiring process.
Hi! Are you now at Google? Curious what you think. I have an interview coming up and would love to hear about your experience.

Is "From the River to the Sea" So Wrong?
Congratulations! , I've worked at Google and its an awesome place to work at , and if your teammates are awesome, its the best it can ever get, next to working for yourself. I'm not sure what kind of level you are at but, if you don't mind moving to California, I'd try to seal the deal ASAP. I'm not sure about the density of opportunities for UX in NY is, check with the recruiter and also check to see if you can chat with people from the teams in NY
Thanks for your response! Honestly, this is what my gut is telling me would be smart to do... So I appreciate your advice. I'm senior level ux research at my current company and I actually know someone who works in the NYC office. I'm having her keep me plugged into what might be happening position-wise. In any case, I'm going to start heavily considering California over the next few weeks. I've worked hard to get myself into this position, so I don't want to waste any momentum. Thanks again!
