The team head is a very good friend of mine.. but again it’s an professional world and no one is there for you.. I don’t really want to leave uber but at the same time I am not happy with my comp and stock grant.. Is it a good idea to discuss with team head that I am interviewing outside and if I get a good offer I will leave.. the head acknowledges that I am not fairly compensated but at the same time doesn’t do much.. My question is: should I be honest here and be upfront or should I interview get an offer and then leave.. I have never used second offer as negotiation tool.. Any insights would be much appreciated. Current comp- 220k
Get an offer and then you can say what you want. You won’t be breaking any “friendship” rules, you are doing what is best for you. “Good” friends would want that for you. Don’t tell, it would complicate issues. Moreover, if you tell you will be interviewing - you never know when you will actually have a decent offer. However good you are, shit happens. Thus, get an offer(s) and then let him know you have been looking. Good luck.
Thanks
YOE? And yeah don’t tell. You don’t what to make him think you’re threatening or bluffing. Just get an offer and tell.
4yoe ..
Yeah man at Uber, 4 YOE you could be doing better I think. Depending on the org/project, promotions can be hard. Keep your head down and Leetcode away.

Do you really feel special in your Tesla?
Don’t share what you plan to do. You never know what may happen; the team head aka friend of yours can play the same statement - this is a professional world - if and when it comes to take a decision. I would advised to get an offer and then have an open discussion.
Thanks
