In this season of layoffs and job insecurity, people on visas have it especially hard, with the 60 day window. If we unionize, one of the first goals of the union would be to target mass layoffs. Ergo, a powerful union would be a sort of “soft green card” in its capability of reducing job insecurity related stress. Change my mind
When people talk about unions they tend to focus on the comp or think somehow unions can control layoffs. What they miss is how the job changes. Since performance becomes a matter of contract every performance metric must be measurable and where real value is not measurable they contract will lean on proxy metrics. Terrible metrics. And the union cannot do anything to stop the business from reducing labor force. What they will do is protect people with time-in-role seniority. Unions are great for truly disempowered groups in commodity roles where labor is indistinguishable.
Unions don’t like to be undercut by foreign temporary workers.
Aren’t there rumor layoffs for PayPal this week ? Just curious .
Tomorrow is the rumor, lasting through Wednesday
Reagan killed unions, there is no point flogging the dead horse. If you form a union, everyone in that union will be fired as unions have no legal protection.
You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about, Reagan was able to fire the striking PATCO workers because they were federal employees and it is technically illegal for federal employees to strike. Private sector unions can strike and cannot just be completely fired. If that was the case, don’t you think auto workers, nurses, writers, and actors in unions would’ve been fired already?
