I'm idly job hunting. I'm an L7 at Google. Per levels.fyi, It looks like L67 (Principal) or L68 (Partner) are Microsoft equivalents, but the L67 comp numbers are quite low. I observe on the MSFT job site that the word "Principal" is in plenty of engineering job listings, but "Partner" appears in exactly zero. Assuming there are a nonzero number of openings for L68 roles, is there any method of differentiating these on the jobsite? I have just been filtering based on the "required YOE" as a first-order function, but wondering if a better way exists. I somehow don't know anyone who currently works at Microsoft, or I'd just ask them. 😭 blind tax: 750k
That’s a sweet TC.
It jumped a bit after today's earnings ;)
There are partner level IC. Also unlike at Google, partners get reevaluated every year and get bumped down 1 levels if not performing
So I heard (on Blind). It's also fairly cutthroat at my level in my present org, so I don't know how much of a worry that would be.
You get headhunted by an executive recruiter and invited and flown on site for interviews. You go out to dinner with the team and meet everybody. Microsoft makes it a special experience
Yeah, I've had that experience elsewhere -- but my inbox is quite dry when it comes to microsoft. Maybe I'll just cold-call some recruiters.
Most L67 comp isn’t publicly posted, but it’s much higher than shown on Levels.
You're not walking into a partner role or applying for it online.
I find this a bit odd (although I believe you) -- at Google there are a reasonable number of roles advertised online at and above these levels. https://www.google.com/about/careers/applications/jobs/results/?q=director https://www.google.com/about/careers/applications/jobs/results/?q=distinguished
Google hires externally at high levels rather than promoting internally far more than Microsoft does. It’s one of the main reasons our leadership is so bad.
They're written on cvp underwear in the crotch area with a sharpie
What is L67 comp range? Someone from MSFT with credible insights?
After I posted this, I successfully secured an interview for a principal role, so I'll post the offer if I get one...
I am 67. Had 800tc last year, but this year is 500tc because of the cliff.
Not saying they're applying thru the job site per se, but the publication of an opening is a signal to qualified folks to reach out to those in their network. Somehow I'm constantly interviewing unqualified L7 candidates at goog that seemingly just crawled out of the sewer. They're getting sourced in somehow...
I have referrals from a CVP, a few VPs and a few partners. Worked with all of them before. I can’t schedule a partner interview loop being L7. This is L8 territory for ICs, and those roles are very rare, and there’s an endless list of internal L67s awaiting the promo. Maybe OP has a better CVP referral, because only CVP or higher could open a partner position. Otherwise, forget about it. Getting L67 offer is common, but the pay would be much lower than what you get at fangs.
Thanks for that perspective.
