I’m joining Yahoo Finance next month, wondering how is their new Mountain View and San Francisco office? They used to have a huge campus in Sunnyvale before with free food, snacks, etc. what are the perks now? #yahoo #engineering #software

Didn't Marissa Meyer take Yahoo out to the backyard and put it out of its misery around 10 years ago? I scraped Yahoo a while back for a personal project using stock quotes - is the ad revenue from this operation the only thing generating revenue? Had to Google this one: Verizon sold off AOL and Yahoo to a PE firm called Apollo back in 2021. So this Yahoo is some franken-zombie firm made from parts of AOL and Yahoo. It is impressive that some PE firm thought that Yahoo still has some brand equity.
Correct. Verizon is a huge company. They are focused on 5G and really wanted to get rid of us, so we were sold pretty cheap. All Apollo has to do is wait until the interest rates fall and we hit the next bubble, then they can sell whatever is left of Yahoo and make a profit.
shh, our existence shall remain a secret
Why go in? We’re remote optional, no one ever goes in. But if you do decide to go in, they’re pretty nice
@mungdaal The recruiter told me 2 days in office, though the team is very flexible about it. So if at all I’ve to go. I’m joining the Data platform team, any idea about that team?
Yeah I think the in office policies are up to manager discretion, but are by no means a company policy. Not sure about the data platform team. Do you know what org it’s under?
Are you sure you want to join Yahoo? I worked at Yahoo for a few years and left it before they sold it to the PE. On the one hand, people at Yahoo are really nice and I enjoyed working there. On the other hand, the company is going nowhere. Many people I know left the company since the PE does not care about anything except for lowering cost (layoffs) and maximizing revenues. If you don't have a better option then go ahead and join Yahoo. If you do, I'd highly recommend you reconsider your decision.
@f-bb other offer I have is from Marqeta it’s a public company and they are giving me RSUs as well, but the TC is equal at both Yahoo and Marqeta. I was mostly leaning towards Yahoo because it’s more well known, maybe it will look good on my resume.
I would take the Marqeta offer
In Mountain View, we have two floors in a shared building. It’s a nice enough space. There’s free EV charging, snacks, and drinks. Free lunch 3 days a week. No onsite gym, but we have OnePass which gives us free or discounted access to certain local gyms. Occasional happy hours and holiday celebrations, maybe around once a month.
@zrrU12 thanks!
Yahoo still alive ? What are their products

They seem dead bc there's a self selecting bias here (techies on TB dont use Yahoo). Still lots of users and like #6 most visited website by traffic I think. Thats said it's not in growth. So if you enjoy having outsized impact on users given your role then Yahoo is nice; if growth environment is important than this isn't the place for you
