How are all H1Bs from India with no GC planning on recession

How are all H1Bs from India with no GC in sight planning recession? Even if recession is 5 years, say even 10 years away, someday it's gonna hit and GC is not gonna come even in 10 years. What are your plans on surviving in US? Specially if you are married or have US-born kid and you are laid off, going back is also gonna be difficult. So many companies have done so crazy hiring that it is not sustainable when markets go south

Make enough money and coast till recession goes away?

Credit Karma 🐨Koala OP Nov 14, 2019

Yeah but how to stay in US? Isn't H1B gone once you are laid off?

Save now. When time comes go home

Microsoft isio37 Nov 14, 2019

The best answer. Live frugally, take lunch from home, save save save.

Many of us are spoiled to have free food :) May be I should start taking some of that free food for dinner as well.

Save till you get there. Work on your skills so that you don’t get fired when recession comes. Not like everyone is fired.

Credit Karma 🐨Koala OP Nov 14, 2019

Not everyone is fired because they are not good enough. Sometimes they are fired because of re-org, business scaling back on product, company not generating enough profit to expand etc.

Netflix RhaYU7a Nov 14, 2019

Firing and Layoffs are different things. The latter is mostly not performance based and has a larger magnitude.

OP going back to India is always an option. If you don’t like going back, plan for Canada right away (at least it’s merit based) and you can get PR in < 1 year. All you need is decent IELTS scores & MS (for high CRS scores)

Amazon superr_man Nov 14, 2019

MS?

Credit Karma 🐨Koala OP Nov 14, 2019

Everyone likes to recommend going back to India but reality is very few go and lot of factors affect this. If you are in US for 10-12 years, you are little attached, 10-12 years is not temporary. Another problem is having kids here and once they are in school, it becomes difficult to adjust for them. Also, even though India is home country, after 10-12 years social life in India too sucks because you are not so much in touch with Indian friends! India also changed a lot and it's not the same home you left. Canada PR is great option but then you have to actually move to Canada else it expires

Make as much as I can here and GTFO, who wants the stress of constant fear of “Will my h1b extension go through”. With no GC in sight it’s a no brainer for me and already looking at other options. Recession fear just adds to that.

Amazon Cannelure Nov 14, 2019

Correct answer, if you are on a temporary visa plan on it being temporary and you will not be disappointed.

Cadence Mariposa Nov 14, 2019

@OP it seems like you have spent a significant portion of your adult life here and seems like you have raised a kid too. The best case scenario is no one bugs you and you continue living here, life is all fine. There are worst case scenarios too; but you have a lot of unknowns attached to that. My advice would be to just live your life the way you do, keep some savings. If the doom hits you will find a way to get out. Just letting you know, you are not alone in this. There are thousands like you. Till then, enjoy life the way you can.

Marry someone not from India. One day there will be no ethnicities and no nations. Archaic laws like country-limits are an opportunity for us to speed that process up.

Amazon Build3rB0b Nov 14, 2019

Save much as you can to FIRE. Then you could move to Canada or India, shouldn't matter because your pay wouldn't affect your day to day life much at that point. Atleast that's what my plan is. 3-4 more years to be fully FI.

I was the most hardworking volunteer for immigration voice, very optimistic. For those of you who remember 2012 Immigration Voice rally in San Jose I was instrumental in organizing it. When I saw the reality in Washington DC and understood that there are very powerful ppl who intentionally want to cause distress particularly to Indians (we earned it in some ways) I decided to plan for options. The day trump got elected we started Canadian PR and got it in 6 months.
