I was affected by the layoffs at Google so starting to look for a new job. I keep seeing people saying the tech market is terrible right now. Based in Los Angeles. Open to in person or remote, not open to relocations With SWE at Google and Amazon on my resume, and a undergrad and masters in CS from a top 25 university, will I still likely have a tough time finding a job in today’s market? I see plenty of job postings in LinkedIn, but I keep seeing posts about how they’re not actually hiring or that it’s really selective, is that true? I’m also ok with my liquid TC going as low as 200k, so I wouldn’t necessarily be looking for exclusively jobs paying 300k+ Prev TC 300k 3.5 YOE Updates so far: Talking with a bunch of recruiters, have 6 interviews scheduled so far, although just first recruiter calls so we’ll see how that goes. This includes a mix of startups, big tech, and fintech/hedge funds. I should also clarify I’m an SRE-SWE at Google so I hopefully have a bit of a different skill set than most backend api SWEs. I’m also a US citizen since people keep asking. Sorry won’t marry you for a GC (first time I’ve been proposed to online lol) Update 2: Getting interviews has been straight forward. Easier than when I was a new grad 3 years ago by a long shot honestly. Have interviews with all FAANG except Apple so far, plus a number of varying tier companies. Getting the offer will be the hard part though, so we’ll see how it goes from here. Update 3: Continuing to get more interviews. Being an SRE is definitely impacting my interviews. Most of the interviews are for SRE or similar positions. I think there’s fewer SREs so it’s easier to stand out. Currently interviewing with ~10ish companies. So far I haven’t been rejected anywhere, although I’ve just started the first real round (after recruiter screen) of interviews. Apparently metas not hiring in LA despite their postings having LA as a location.
What was your cash comp of your last role?
Not sure what you mean exactly. Been at google 2 years and was at Amazon 1.5. Last year my tc was 163k base, 55k bonus (include on call additional comp) and ~80k stocks. But this is all liquid since it’s a public company. First year at google was 240k pre stock drop, 220k after,. Amazon tc was ~150k out of school.
Are you looking for another fang or startup? Getting 160k at startup is possible but north of 200 in this economy is not likely unless it’s a profitable or series D plus startup imo
Previously when I get an auto-rejection after applying, it usually said there are other more qualified candidates or my background didn’t match what they’re looking for Recently, most rejections say the position has already been filled or cancelled and this comes much later than the time taken for an auto-reject email
Ah damn that sucks to hear.
Sucks to hear? That’s actually an improvement compared to before.
I have found the market pretty good, but it's possible that my interviews are all gonna have an insanely high hiring bar or something. Prev TC: 320k YOE: 9
Feel the same, the interview is crazy
Also interested in this definition of "crazy"
Meanwhile me at 8 yoe and with tc 180k at Microsoft. 🫡
Did you just start or something?
congratulations, you ll get to 250k by the end of 2026 surely
Let us know when you find out! You’re going to have a much better gauge on how desirable your resume and skills are in the job market pretty soon. Good luck!
Depends a lot on your location too. If you are in a high cost location, Bay Area or New York or Seattle etc, then you would have a tougher time as hiring has slowed in this locations for generic skills.
That’s uhh…. Not true?
Lmao those are literally the best 3 locations to job hunt
You are the guinea pig
Can you clarify what “liquid” means. Idk why people don’t just say base or total comp
I mean anything except for equity in a company that’s not publicly traded.
If that’s what you meant then 200k is easy IMO, but maybe not for your YOE
I am a senior upper management type and have not worked since September. The hiring environment is extremely non and dys-functional right now. It really doesn’t matter who you are. It’s a time when your accomplishments cannot speak much for you and drive your candidacy. It’s who you know. That’s your only lifeline right now.
who you know = referrals?
How senior ? What was your severance like ?
> 3.5 YOE > “I’m okay with my liquid TC going as low as 200k” lol. lmao, even.
clearly a statement from someone whose only worked at FAANG😂
I was making like 90k at that YOE(not at amzn)… kinda crazy how far inflation has come
