TC: $140k I know the usual best route is to just look for a new job, but I'd like to stay with Khan Academy for a bit longer (2+ more years). However, comparing my total comp to the lowest level engineers at Google, FB, etc really hurts my soul. I'm obviously not getting any stock options or anything of value besides my weekly check and health benefits. How do I even start asking for a salary bump? I'm in a position where they need me (only dev on a certain team) and have a good relationship with my boss. I realize it's a non-profit so they're already kind of strapped for cash. I'm unsure. Any help? #salaries #tech #nonprofit
It really depends on what you’re willing to accept and what you value more TC, the team, the company, etc In the worst case you ask for a raise and they say no, are you willing to stay?
Ask what it takes to get to the next level, both career path and salary.
I'll do this. Thank you.
Either switch companies or live with the lower pay. At best you might get a trivial bump for asking.
Don’t let the fact that it’s a nonprofit make you feel guilty about asking for what you think you’re worth. The eng team is not cash strapped and they will pay to keep good talent. I recommend bringing up the career trajectory conversation during a quarterly check-in or even a 1:1, not waiting for a mid year or annual review. It shows initiative. Remember to focus on what value you add to the org, not what you think you deserve or why you want more. Good luck!
Thank you fellow KA! I talked to my manager and I am set up for the yearly evaluation. So I will get a raise, but unsure how to push for $X amount. Just excited I don't have to wait an entire year.

Get an offer and have a discussion. If they value you they will give you a raise..if they don’t then you will know 🤷🏽♂️
Seems like the golden-route, but feeling sentimental about my company at the moment. Not ready to go that "extreme".
You are just another resource to them and they wouldn’t think twice about cutting you if they have to. Never get too sentimental. You will find tons of stories on blind who stayed way too long at a place only to regret it later.
