For those who suggest leaving as the only option - Why should a person leave company or change teams just because of their boss when the project and company are otherwise right fit.
Because you won’t change your boss’s behavior.
Anonymously gift them the book “Servant Leadership”
As an IC you are at a disadvantage. Your options and power are limited. Life is unfair. You can be 100% on the right side of things and still lose horribly. So shake your tiny fist at the system and see if you get lucky. Whatever happened to that guy who sent out a mass email when his manager blocked his move to another team? Nothing. Nothing will change until the culture and the system are forced to do.so.
As an IC, nothing. Keep working toward company goals, stay professional. I’ve seen this happen and boss’s boss’s boss was aware of it. He ran around mending the guy’s broken relationships, set expectations in a general way as to not trigger narcissistic injury—all c-levels were sent to manager training even though only this guy needed it. He also promoted highly emotionally intelligent people around him to try and buffer the staff from him. But it was bad still.
That was an amazing effort by boss's boss's boss. Thanks for sharing this!
It was, but at the end of the day we really wished he could have just been fired. Idk what goes into firing a c-level. Maybe he had a contract so it would have been too expensive, but at the end of the day it was just so hard to get everything done and many top performers left.
You can try talking to your boss’s boss. But that could backfire. So, have a plan B lined up, if you go that route.
This. If the company culture is a good fit, go up the chain. It won't backfire unless you're wrong and the org culture is a mess. Competent managers of managers love feedback on how their directs are doing. They typically have no good mechanism to evaluate besides you telling them.
Manager's manager can be a good person but with laissez-faire (let people do as they choose) attitude!
