Aside newgrads and superstars with 20yoe Senior Staff positions from top tech? I have 10 YOE, I think a good resume with functional programming experience, non US masters in CS with outstanding GPA. But they still don’t even want to talk to me Is getting a referral feasible / helpful or it’s an elite Netflix-like club where you can’t get it till you know people inside?
they always hire IMO olympiad medalists, if you have one I can help you get an interview by referring to someone
I solved a few LC hards, does that count?
That’s funny. But sorry, LC hards sound like preschool questions to IMO Olympiad medalists.
I am leaving with Netflix as of this week. Taking a break, for kids. Even I have no Luck getting a call from Jane street. I was outright lucky that I got a call from Netflix without applying, I didn’t know anyone
Wait so how did you get in? A recruiter reached out randomly?
I’m guessing you had a specialized/rare skillset they were specifically targeting
someone with 10 yoe talking about having an outstanding gpa. that could be why.
I don’t know if you are just in a mood to shit on someone or just an ass, but Jfyi hft and finance companies care about your gpa very much. And if you don’t include it they ask about it anyways. Yes it’s dumb but that’s how they work
you shat on yourself. im just pointing out your shit
This cooper union meme has to stop lmao, JS barely has any hires from them. If you really wanted to maximize your chances of getting into JS with your university, go to CMU or MIT. Also you do not need an affiliation with IOI, thats also another overblown blind meme. JS skews to hiring early career. If you are applying later in your career you need a niche skillset that they happen to be looking for, or you should ideally be from another trading firm. Most hires from tech are people at the top of their game from Meta or Google. Source: Was at a top trading firm and have several friends at JS.
Where are you now, New?
Stop overrating employers lol. Just focus on bettering yourself and the right opportunity will come. You eventually get interview calls from companies you'd be a good fit at. If you are not hearing back from Jane Street, then that place is not for you and you won't be happy there. If you take a quick look at the backgrounds of folks working at Jane Street, they either got there via internship or their major is Math/Stat. Jane Street is more of a trading algorithms company and let's accept it, they are not really looking for software engineers, they are looking for coders with math and trading background. Internships too were most students' third internship after intering at FAANG and Bloomberg/Two Sigma in their earlier summers along with having taken Math/Stats courses. Personally, applying my engineering skills in that domain doesn't interest me so I know it's not for me, they also know that so I'll never get an interview from them. If you really want it, perhaps pursue a master's in Quant/Trading Algorithms? That's all they are looking for.
?? First paragraph is reasonable then it went massively downhill. We def arent looking for math and trading backgrounds in our swes. Also do not get a master's to help you get hired by JS.
Do a quick LinkedIn search and look at the backgrounds of most of the profiles, most of them have some kind of minor, project or interest in Math/Stats or have prior internships at FAANG and are from specific schools (Univ of Waterloo stands out for some reason). That's from a sample size of top 50 profiles I saw, of course it may not apply to the rest of them, for a thorough analysis we'll actually need a way to download all that data in Excel and look for more patterns. The masters was a mere suggestion because you can't really pursue a bachelor's again in a particular major, you can also do a simple online course or nano degree focussed on this stuff. The caveat obviously remains that you need to be really interested in math and trading systems and Jane Street is going to look for that interest, and these are merely some ways to exhibit your interest. Obviously some teams at Jane Street will look for simple front end, full stack devs, but I'm sure they won't be paid as much as the value people with a stats background bring.
Just get good
Dm for Rippling referrals
It's really not very hard. I just swipe my badge and take the elevator up.
I have to swipe my badge three times before I take the elevator. Must mean Meta is 3x as difficult to get into.
Idk I did an onsite when I had like 4 yoe it was pretty standard. Nerves got the best of me during one of the rounds but the questions didn’t feel “hard” at all or tricky, felt like they just wanted to hear my thought process
Think about it from their end - how do you expect them to find your resume in the pile? It’s either gotta stand out or someone’s gotta move it to the top.
