How do you keep motivated when your coworkers got fired. I believe we have over 50k employees in the U.S and over 20k employees got fired at IBM.#layoff #severance
Is that the official number? 20k?
Give or take, read an article on boomerang
"In online forums and private messaging groups, other former and current IBM employees shared snippets of information. Some posts recounted an executive based in Raleigh, North Carolina, telling staff that 20,000 workers were affected. Others said this is IBM’s biggest staff reduction in a decade." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-06-01/ibm-the-silent-job-cutter-stokes-worker-anxiety-speculation

Nah man/woman I’m serious. Like you just start at google let’s say... and a few months later half your staff gets laid off. Like should I look for new work?? Am I going to be next in the coming months
You'll get laid off a few times in your career.
Yea it's fucking depressing. TripAdvisor had two rounds of layoffs and I saw some bright co-workers getting shafted. (Along with some fat that definitely needed to be trimmed). But overall morale tanked across the company and almost nothing got done for months. The whole time I just grinded leetcode and got offers from FAANG couple weeks ago. I start at FB next monday with huge jump in TC. My advice: whether or not the company makes a comeback does not matter. Fact is that any company doing layoffs is a shit company to be at right now. And we are fortunate to have options in our industry. Go out there and get something better for yourself.
You comment on the #join-Arvind Slack with your question instead of posting it to the Blind community. If we don’t hold our leadership accountable, they will continue to oppress us.
Well yeah but isn’t it the same guy that said he wasn’t going to do layoffs during a pandemic or am I tripping
Don’t wanna say something and then get laid off
you don't. it's a shite show. Look to eject asap or stay if the Severance is worthy. at any rate, I would not be looking at the company as a long-term investment. pump n dump
Fire here & Hire in India!!!
The 20k (40%) cut makes those who remained elits?
get used to it. IBM has been doing this for 15 years.
How’s the severance?
From what I’ve heard, 30 days notice (60 in CA), 90 days pay, 1 year medical. For those in CA, 150 days should be plenty to leetcode and find a new job in my opinion, although there is definitely more pressure on those who require visa sponsorship.
Not completely true. There are people who got 30 days in CA as notice

isn’t it motivating that you were picked to stay?
Man I just got hired. I’m more scared that I might be next
and the guy that’s been there for a long time has the same concern, often even more concerned. the point remains that you were picked to stay, and that should be motivating. if you were let go, the motivation is finding a new job. it comes from you, not a company
