They were behind in the GenAI race compared to GPT and had no chance of catching them. By releasing it publicly and being the only one, they now have a world of people helping iterate on it
Just to fk around with openai and Google ;)
What lockheed said, also an entire platform can be built on these, which is an entire ecosystem using FB vs. Other companies
They are the only AI contender that doesn’t sell B2B products for genAI (not counting genAI for ads) which is where the real money is. So they open source it to stay relevant and as PR. Same as Apple and privacy (not selling ads, but that’s changing now). No company is doing things for the greater good, there’s always money at the end of the day and PR/marketing are (sometimes) smart to capitalize on public naiveness.
Thanks for insights. Meta is also pushing other companies to use its “free” ML infra e.g. https://pytorch.org/executorch-overview . With PyTorch becoming de facto framework, free LLMs and compiler front ends (on device, not data centers) … Meta seems to be taking an unusual path vs others.
Could do some kind of free product with paid service later on. Lots of tech companies have a free product with either better paid tiers or the product is flagship and the company sells some kind of enterprise service support for businesses. Or they could have some other plan 🤷♂️ like just releasing it for public benefit or hurt competitors. I’m curious too
