What makes it stand out from Amazon? Why use it instead of Facebook marketplace?
Why not interview at other places before you commit to eBay
I look at items on amazon and then buy it from eBay. Its almost 20% cheaper and great return policies. Things do take time to come.
Same here! Lol read product reviews from Amazon and then buy that stuff from eBay:-)
But you have to again read seller reviews on eBay :)
I am x-ebay employee.. I use amazon prime.. but when it comes to money, Facebook is last company I want to trust.. don't know why..
Is there an a reason to use eBay over amazon? I feel like the service and speed on amazon is top notch.
Price, selection, China drop shipping, used items. I shop mostly from Target, if you have red card it is all free shipping with no membership fee
Target is great. Amazon prime obviously set the stage, but many companies now have 2 day free shipping. Lots of items on eBay have fast and free shipping and many times they ship vis prime, but for cheaper
Ebay is a dying business. They are alive because of existing userbase
Based on what eveidence?
Based on rev growth https://www.statista.com/statistics/233761/year-on-year-revenue-of-amazon-and-ebay-since-2006/ In recent years ebay’s rev growth is from subsidiaries... It’s like yahoo a few years ago. Growth were from yahoo japan and Alibaba investment
EBay prides itself on 1. its unique inventory and 2. cheap prices. They are a cash cow business that provides a service between Amazon and etsy.
Is the business growing? Or stagnant?
Growing, but slowly relative to other marketplaces.
I use ebay for sniping deals which usually much cheaper than any store physically and online. Also, there is no tax for most transaction. 1)The downside is that you need to research buyer reviews esp review for the item you want to buy. Ebay doesn’t have a good way to research this. 2)If you get into trouble, ebay is there to help but the waiting time and making a case are quite long. 3)Search sucks esp when sorting. Too much noise in the result. It’s not common to see all those downsides but they are there. Out of 20 txs, I got 1-2 scams. Amazon ratio is 1/50. In short, if you need sth quick, buy Amazon even if you get into trouble their return time is amazing. You want sth unique, at good price and willing to spend time for resolving problem in the worst case (1/20 ratio quite high comparing to A), eBay is the answer. Personally anything that’s relatively expensive (electronics, expensive clothes..) I buy on eBay. Anything essential and I want it quick (socks, container, ingredients...) I use my A Prime.
#3 is why i said ebay is a dying business. They stopped caring about making their service better. The search has sucked for at least a decade.
Search does suck because of the noise. We are actively working on that. Search has actually gone through many iterations in the past 5 years alone. Searching the world's largest catalogue is actually a pretty difficult problem. 😕
1- 8 out of 10 times you will find cheapest deal on eBay compared to competitors. 2- eBay enjoys the biggest catalogue .. you can find virtually anything ... Lots of unique collections and antiques .. 3- eBay started to do well on automobiles .. you can find good deals in car / trucks / etc 4- eBay has bunch of classified companies ... Doing very well across the globe ... Gumtree, stubhub, etc They are in everything you can think of in e-commerce and they have presence everywhere ... 5- eBay still has a huge user base being the oldest in the business. 6- eBay don't have its own inventory like Amazon .. it's perceived as negative but they are saving huge logistics expenditures .. 7- eBay treat well their employees and give them a good work life balance as compared to its competitors.. Of course there are many negative points but just answered what makes it stand out from Amazon
I wouldn’t agree about your pointer on eBay giving it’s employee good work life balance. Worked at Ebay for three years before moving to Amazon.. Was fed up of the politics and shitty leadership
I agree on politics this is biggest negative point at eBay , but it is bit different than work life balance .. if there is no politics eBay would have been in totally different position .. much much better than it is now ..
From a pure financial point of view, eBay generates around $2b in cash every year, with a market cap of $40b... insanely good business model. People forget that eBay owns some big brands, including Stubhub, Kijiji, marktplats etc (latter 2 classifieds and are big internationally)... yes, we don’t really have super innovative drone delivery type ideas but we do refine and continue to try to make our product better despite the challenge of structured data
What is the challenge of structured data?
The reason why ebays search experience is so cluttered is because we don’t have the taxonomy for every single listing. So when you search for an iPhone we can’t collapse all the listings into a product experience, similar to how Amazon does. This has been the biggest pain point as having that taxonomy opens up a ton of possibilities in terms of product experience and even marketing, merchandising etc
