Asking for Zendesk’s potential layoff. Which department goes first? Do employees under < 1 year at Zendesk go first?
Contractors, non essential first. I think departments will get numbers to layoff afterwards and its delegated down. Depends on company ofc but thats what happened in my parents’ companies when they were middle managers
That's what happened when I had to lay people off too. I got a number and had to manage to it.
I was looking at Coinbase’s layoffs today and they have fired Senior Product Managers as well, which I always assumed are essential and core to the business.
If they are scaling back work, or people to do the work, they won't need as many project managers.
Ya. Think of it as an re-adjustment. Say, your company value is 25 percent of what you had in mind when you did the hiring. You need to adjust your goals to reflect that. You then need to adjust your team to reflect that changed goal. People who have been around less than 1 year are not likely to help accelerate progress compared to someone who has been around 5 years. Exceptions are specialized skillset (for ex deep mysql expert) or very senior person in a critical non-managerial role. Managers are more likely to be cut in a layoff because typically you want to lessen org chart depth and width.
And theyll re evaluate people’s value compared to comp
Id say it’s more about seniority specifically than comp, but yeah that is highly related. You still want to have a target ratio or distribution of junior and senior people on your team, though the specific target will change. In most cases, you would likely want to shift the distribution more to senior folks, unless you made poor choices.
At Coinbase lots of manager and senior engineers are laid off as well.
In large companies the uncomfortable truth is that it’s not people that get laid off, it’s organizations and roles that get eliminated. Typically your direct management chain (M1/2/3) is only finding out hours before you do.
