I moved to Canada as a PR in January and have applied to around 500 jobs since December. I only got 1 interview call and received the rejection letter yesterday after attempting the second round. I only have enough money to last about two or three months. I'm not sure what more I need to do after: 1. Obtaining my PMP and CSM certifications; 2. Revamping my resume several times; 3. Tailoring resumes to each job description; 4. Having coffee chats with industry professionals and soliciting suggestions; and 5. Making relevant connections through LinkedIn and taking every piece of advice I could get my hands on. My profile: 1. Graduation and post-graduation in business 2. 6 years of project management experience with non-profit organizations in the domain areas of social impact, financial inclusion, and sustainability 2. PMP and CSM certified 3. Google Project Management and Data Analytics certifications completed I'd love to hear your ideas on how to handle my situation. Also, if you have any job leads in Toronto or any remote roles, please feel free to let me know! Keep your chin up and March on. Things will work out eventually. The current market is very difficult for even veterans. If money is tight, don't be shy to get something to for short term. Rogers, Telus always hiring in the call center. You can move to corporate office through internal application. If you have been applying for experienced positions, I would say you will need referrals to crack that space. Once you have few years of experience in Canada, you will get a lot of calls. If you have PMP, maybe govt jobs are worth a try. But the project Manager role at the government will need you to be bilingual. In the end, it doesn't matter where you came from. Everyone has to grind to land the job for the first time.
I know; considering the market conditions, there would be at least hundred applications for each job role. I am getting rejections for customer care jobs as well. You wouldnβt believe but even Tim Horton is not accepting any resumes for part time roles. Itβs really difficult to penetrate into any jobs without referral and being a newcomer, it is equally hard to grow your network. I have been trying to reach out to people on Linkedin but they keep ghosting me. I havenβt tried for government jobs here yet since they would be more difficult in terms of the competition. But I will look into government programs and roles. I hope I keep grinding till the end and stay on top. With the recession and all, I am just living with time bomb. If you donβt mind, may I DM you?
Sure
DM for PayPal if you find anything relevant
Will do; sure thanks.
Since you have PR can't you try contract jobs?
I haven't even filtered part time jobs, let alone contractual ones. At one stage, I was so desperate that I was knocking doors of retail stores. Ironically, even Tim Hortons didn't give me any calls because they were not hiring and I didn't have any referral.
If something interests you at booking dot com, hit me up with job link and your cv. All the best!
Sure! Will do!
OP,. Not going to lie. It's going to be tough. Three things working against you. 1. Lot of laid off folks in the market right now:. They will get the first call before you do. 2. Role: sounds like you are targeting a fairly generic role, Project Manager. Try to target a domain and a sub-domain otherwise recruiters (the gatekeepers ) will ignore your resume. 3. Canadian experience : sad reality of the market is that recruiters and employees won't recognize your foreign education and workmexperience. Be ready to accept an entry level role and find your way up later. That's how most immigrants start out if they land here without jobs. 4. Certifications : don't spend any more money on certifications . I'd ont think anyone cares about them. Maybe the PMP still carries some value so maybe only that one. Others can chime in.
Thank you for your response, aNaq21: 1. Agreed; there's no way I'll be prioritized over folks who were laid off from huge organizations. 2. I attempted to limit myself to specific domain areas, but I received no output. Now I just keep applying to jobs where I can match up to 70% of the time. 3. I have no problems starting with entry-level positions, but it's really difficult to get calls without Canadian experience, which leads me back to looking for work. :P :) How can somebody gain Canadian experience without a job? A classic Chicken-Egg problem. 4. That is an excellent suggestion. I was considering getting ITIL, but I'll pass for the time being.
DM me if you find a suitable role at eBay
Sure! I am DMing you.
DM for instacart
Thanks a lot! I am DMing you.
bangali?
Yes I am !
Network, Network, and Network. In the normal times, it takes ~2-4 months to find a good fit in Canada. These are not normal times as most companies have either stopped hiring or are in layoff mode. So have patience. But if you only have money left for 2-3 months, I suggest make contingency plans. See if you can arrange funds to last 6 months without a job.
Where did you move from ?
Bangladesh Just curious: Does my origin make a huge difference?
Its okay, as long as not from
