Asking for a friend, new grad with physics bs degree from uc and one year of physics masters complete. Took coursera Google data science certificate and is looking for a role. How likely are they to find anything?
Lot of physics people work in data science At FAANG, LinkedIn, Uber, Lyft, Nvidia, Microsoft etc If they still has college left, they should intern for sure Otherwise, it should be possible to break into new grad roles, at a smaller company if not the big ones
Thanks. My friend says they applied to 300 roles and have gotten any follow up.
I think your friend needs to work on their resume. The big ones usually send out the first coding round at least for new grad if you have decent projects, and any technical/Stem internship/s
You can post their resume here with info redacted The community would definitely give feedback for the same
DS is also a bit harder to break into right out of undergrad than other roles IMO. Way fewer entry roles proportionally, and have to compete with PhDs for them. They might want to look at data analyst and similar roles too, then move to DS after a year or 2.
Thank you all for sharing your info
just leetcode sql and python
It’s hard for new grad with no industry experience. Lots of supply and little demand. Most companies would rather pay more to get someone with experience than investing time to train someone.
