Considering making the switch. I heard WLB is much better than FB and IPO is on the way. I also heard that employees aren’t very happy right now. Also what’s the interview process like? Thoughts? TC: 185k
Why want to leave already, guessing less than a year?
Airbnb is good. Focuses on good internal culture, aims to help our customers make meaningful connections rather than just cookie cutter travel, fantastic founder CEO who is sharp and straightforward. The company believes in doing what’s right. The offices are beautiful. And yeah, IPO some time, who knows when. It’s not perfect. Some teams are better than others. I won’t give specifics publicly. Some teams have WLB better than others. Dev tooling and environment won’t be as mature as what you experience at Facebook. But people are nicer than at Facebook. (Source: coworker who worked at both.)
What would you know about air bnb. Lying rebel scum.
The first paragraph that you said all applies to FB too imo (although public opinion might not agree). The stuff re: dev tooling and environment is ok, seems like a good place to make impact. Thanks for the comment! Any input re: interviews? Or should I just ask my recruiter
Does AirBnB have an office in South Bay? That is the only thing that has prevented me from applying in the past.
No. For developers the choices are SF, Portland, Seattle, and a new office in LA.
San Jose and San Francisco are really two different cities with 2-3 hours of commute between them in each direction. They should be treated as two unrelated cities like SF and Seattle. No idea why companies think of them as one combined area. Maybe it made sense 20 years ago when the Bay area was not as densely populated -- not anymore.
Interviews are challenging. Definitely make sure you're comfortable with leetcode. There are other pieces of our process that are not related to coding which your recruiter can give you details on. I think Airbnb is a great place to be. Obviously it does vary by team just like any other company. There is a bootcamp at the beginning though simular to Facebook so you get to meet some people before selecting a team. The business is doing well, the perks are great, the people are smart and nice, the offices are beautiful. We have many ex-fb folks here already and the ones I have spoken with seem happy. I think some of the problems that we had earlier this year have largely been addressed. We found a new CFO and CTO recently which is making people more optimistic. Some old timers have been a bit salty about liquidity, but they have quelled people's concerns a bit recently with a yearly cash bonus and by allowing us to cash out a portion of our refreshers. The company is much different than it was 5 years ago since there are now 10x more employees. But that doesn't mean it's bad. I think you should interview and see what happens. Depending on your yoe, just your base salary here will likely match or beat your current tc
Do most people select their team after joining? I have an offer and the recruiter pitched me on a specific team before my on-site.
I like it. Haven't been here super long. Most teams seem to have good WLB, mine... less so, but I knew that going in and there were some advantages that made it worth it. People seem generally very nice and very smart. Culture feels a little more active here, I feel closer to my team here than at internships at other companies in the past (new grad).
