How are opportunities and TC like in Australia? Seems like a pretty cool place to live.
Heard 100k considered good pay.
More like 200k, at least in Sydney.
Yes likely. I was referring to Melbourne
3 of the 5 deadliest snakes in the world are indigenous to Australia. The inland taipan delivers enough venom in a single bite to kill 50 grown men. It is the land of serpents!
Lmao
Inland Taipan lives in a small patch of desert like 200kms for the nearest outback town. It’s like a whole expedition to get there, then you have to motorbike across the desert and rummage though cracks in the soil to find one. At the point you finally see one they’re not even hostile and will try to run away. Props to anyone who can get bitten but this thing.
Sydney felt like a cleaner San Francisco. But with shitter food scene and less diversity. It’s definitely one of my favorite cities though.
Less diversity in Australia, lol. When I went to India, all I saw was Indians and no Diversity.
OP isn’t talking India, now is he?
It’s pretty cool if you like rat sized spiders 🕷
I find this hilarious
Outside a handful of companies. Optiver, Google, ... you're typically maxed out at $150-200k TC even at 15+ YoE. Some outliers but not comparable to SF, Seattle, or NYC TC.
I have heard WLB is way better though. Maybe worth the lower $ TC when you can take off a full month here and there
Aus not really for engineers. I make way more in consulting than most SWE in Aus...while in the US SWE makes 2x a consultant. Wlb is only good if you work at an Aus company
TC is peanuts compared to what you get paid in SF, NYC or Seattle. US$ 150K ~ AU$200k is considered good here. And most of the jobs at director/ executive managers is capped there.... it’s hard to get past that amount. Wlb is definitely better, work conditions are better, 4 weeks paid time off every year +10 personal days off is normal for most employers. Public health system is one of the best in world Taxes are higher Sydney and Melbourne are expensive (look at house prices, groceries, transport, essentials cost online) And no u don’t come across deadly snakes usually in urban area ( I have lived 17 years in Sydney, haven’t spotted 1 snake). Spiders are everywhere though. Hope this helps
What's the difference between 4 week paid time off and the 10 personal days? Do you mean the 10 is like for sick day and such?
Queensland is literally the promised land. Think the best of Miami/California without the corruption/crime/poverty. As others have pointed out the tech industry is nascent and limited mainly to Sydney Melbourne with peanut TC. Big brain move is to come to US and make bank and transfer it home with good Forex rates and live like a king. I am 50% finished with this plan.
How did you go about doing it? Did you apply for roles while in Au or did u move to US and looked for work? Or took a transfer?
Facebook, Uber and some other companies come on regular hiring trips, taking advantage of the fact that Australia has good talent but criminally underpaid and underutilized. They do a week long batch event and interview dozens of candidates. They can offer low/mid band TC for L4/L5 positions and it’s still usually 2-3x local TC for the same job.
Australia is a fantastic place to live, great quality of life, nice weather year round, stable politics, friendly people but it will likely depress you how comparatively poor and much lower status engineers are compared to the US
TC is definitely getting better due to rising valuations, growing tech scene and closed immigration. Contracts are great. You can work on a higher rate per hour thanks to public health system You can move to USA at anytime because of visa get that high tc and pay off your mortgage. Taxes are higher and living costs too. But the general perception is you get a lot of value for the money paid I am doing my post grad here. Coming to TC, more than TC. Quality of work is depressing. There is no scale in Australia due to low population. You actually get paid a lot by pure monetary value for the work you do. However quality of software is great. Great emphasis on testing at modern companies.
