Got new grad offer for box (full remote) and am pretty excited because the project seems cool. Wanted to know if people and current employees think it’s a good place to learn/grow? Is it a good name to get FANG interviews if I leave in the future? Expected TC: 175k (year 1)
Solid company
As a new grad you'll learn a lot anywhere. And Box doesn't have a bad reputation or anything, probably mostly neutral. So accepting this is not a _bad_ option. There are probably some better places out there (what they would be depends on what you're looking for) but at the end of the day, if Box is your best looking offer, you can feel fine about going with it. Then you can plan on getting a few years of experience there and then hopping to something else _if_ you want.
Was going to potentially cancel amazon on-site after this news because of the bad rep. Would you recommend still going through it?
Yes I would still go through with it. It will give you more interview experience, which will help you in the future. You will potentially get another offer, which you can use to try to get more money out of Box or others. It will give you a closer look into what Amazon is like, and being plugged in to your industry can be helpful. I certainly wouldn't recommend accepting an Amazon offer if you get one. The only argument for doing so would be "it's FAANG" and you have an explicit plan to slog it out for 1-2 years and then leave. Still I would just go with Box.
Good for new grad
What project?
Meh
It's chill. Not a rocket ship like some companies so people shit on them here. Most human company I've worked for by miles and I've been around. That also kills any new grad offer I've seen, ever, at box
A 💩 company that gives high TC
Box does not hire a lot of new grads and the few they hire are mostly returning interns. Companies that hire lots of new grads have more structured mentorship/training programs. You will not get that at Box If that's something important to you, maybe there are better options. If you don't need mentorship, lots to learn here In terms of the name, you can interview anywhere afterwards
I was hired as a Sr software engineer as a new grad.
If you wanna work on new innovative things then there are better options out there
Plenty of teams at Box working in innovative stuff, lots of new features in the pipeline
Innovation at Box = boring shit everywhere else
Worse than Dropbox, bad on call, archaic codebase, stock doesn’t move. That was my impression when interviewing there, but 175 and entry level is epic so just take it.
How bad is their codebase?
I definitely saw that the stock isn’t going anywhere. Could you expand a bit more about the code base and on call?
