I interviewed at Capital One for a software eng role, got an offer for a software architect position across two teams, which is a slightly higher level of responsibility than my current role. Interviews went great, interviewers were people I think I'd enjoy working with, hiring manager meeting went well too. Then I got the offer with TC of <$200k. My current TC is $500k+ (no stock appreciation... we don't have that at Dropbox), and none of my other offers are even remotely in the $200k ballpark. Even pre-series-A startups offered cash salary greater than this (and they offered equity on top of course). How does Capital One hire anybody in SF with this kind of pay? #CapitalOne
Lol Blind is a niche circle of ultra high performers. Reality is r/cscareerquestions.
I graduated in 1973 and still can not find a job in CS, have been working at McDonald’s ever since.
In absolute terms, yeah $200k is nothing to scoff at. But to forgo $300k+ difference at other companies (like Dropbox) which are totally fine companies to work for? I think anyone would agree that's a tough pill to swallow. YOE: 10-15 years, IC4
Are you really this disconnected from reality?
Yes it's weird that they'd get an offer that's half their current, but I'm moreso responding to the last broad question - "how capital one would hire anyone in SF with this salary". There are thousands who'd jump at this, that aren't currently making as much.
@jxnwjzb can you elaborate? I don't make the reality. In economics terms, I'm a price-taker; the market sets my wage and everyone other than Capital One seems to mostly agree.
A lot of companies offered me $150-200k ballpark as Sr SWE prior to me working at FB. TC is 400k with appreciation
I interned at Capital One and worked 1 hour a day. There are quite a few people willing to take a cushy job for medium comp.
Witch companies manager roles make 100k tc in MV , whats you point ?
Were you not familiar with C1? It sucks balls, it's same tier/compensation as AT&T, Cisco, HP. They gave me a written offer letter and I didn't even show up to the interview for it
Why did you even interview with them? Did they not provide you a range before the interviews? Clearly they wouldn't have been able to match your TC. No amount of wlb will make up for that difference
Take the offer and work both jobs. 1 additional hour per day for an extra 200k isn't bad.

Work life balance I guess? Worked for a traditional bank once, 2hours of work every week.
Recruiter did mention WLB, but 2 hours per week is not WLB, that's just L. If she had phrased it that way it would have been a much better sales pitch...
Which traditional bank?
