How long until

companies realize tech bros don’t deserve to earn as much as (or even more than) surgeons, NASA scientists and economists. Interviewing feels like gaming after a certain point. My skills haven’t changed much in last few months but I’ve been able to double my TC. I get the demand supply equation, but the skills required do not match the high TCs. It’s only a matter of time until this bubble pops.

Economists make a lot of money?!

Meta sendn00bs Sep 1, 2022

They’ve been saying this for 15 years…

Which company is paying you double? I would like to interview

Shopify FkXR27 Sep 1, 2022

Economists are the most useless group of people. The fed has 150 phd economists on their payroll and still cant get shit remotely right.

Hey they’re working on perfecting their tea leaf readings

Google basicwitch Sep 1, 2022

I always thought meteorologists were useless since you can be right 50% of the time and still keep their jobs.

Zeta 1toka4 Sep 1, 2022

Wanted to spit hate at economists as well but that's already taken care of.

hot take: software engineers are underpaid

Meta 🌊⚠️ Sep 1, 2022

You're not paid what you are because you deserve it. Becoming a software engineer is extremely difficult, average Joe Blow is going to struggle to write Fizz Buzz. If it was that easy to replace us, it would've happened already

Economists provide negative value

Google vKfK17 Sep 1, 2022

Until the supply of SWEs hits demand. I think supply will increase as more and more people join tech for the money. I also see demand decreasing when the market stops throwing capital at any tech-project that seems semi-viable. We are already kind of seeing this in the current economic environment. I think a SWE job will always pay decent though as it's a hard skill to learn and not just anyone can do it. For example, I actually enjoy programming and will probably continue to do it as a hobby even when I retire. But I wouldn't do a SWE job for anything less than $150K as it just wouldn't be worth it.

It’s about return on investment not how important or not important a job is. Tech companies put X dollars to hire somebody and check if their return is higher or not. The cycle keeps on until ROR is negative or equalized.
