Crossed a line with my boss
I don't think people look at it as a % of annual income
How do they look at it then?
Depends. Can you afford it? Is it worth it? For some it is a means from A to B. For some it is their brand. For some a dream car. It's a depreciating asset, not always. However it's not a % of annual income.
5-10% of my monthly take home as payments
Lol
Why the lol ?
The rule I have heard is no more than 10% of annual pre-tax TC.
I see. I was told 25-30% of you annual income. With 10% rules I don’t think there are lots of people in the US(other than tech) who should be buying a 25k car!
Your words make the dealers cry.
I bought my vehicle over 10 years ago for 16k Why spend money on a depreciating asset?
I don’t think every purchase is associated with returns! For lots of people, car is a lifestyle purchase than an investment. Its no different than people fine dining, traveling, buying nice clothes, etc!
I get it, but its just not something I personally enjoy. Its a tool to go from A-B When I started feeling some FOMO for a new vehicle, i just upgraded the radio and got some interior accessories like seat covers / floor mats. Scratched the itch
Bought my current car 6 years ago and I paid cash (equivalent to about 12% of my annual income) for it. If I were to replace it today, it would be about 2% of my annual income. Will probably get another 5 years out of it and I love her every day. Not quite a luxury driving machine but she’s tough and gives me all the freedom I want to get through mud and snow without a worry.
2% is really optimistic. Unless you are making a million dollars, you probably can’t buy anything reliable!
A used Nissan and the numbers check out but TC is admittedly high.
It's your choice! If you're a car lover, 100%+
Op wants to buy a car of 140k at TC of 550k , but feeling guilty and here for validation. Just do what you want to do
Ha ha.. you are right! I have it on order but my wife thinks its a bad idea and she would rather have a Mode Y! I always think if I can make little more money I should be able to afford it or get a side gig to pay for the car. I wasn’t born in a very rich family so large purchases still put me in panic mode! Have been driving a 10yr old subaru for a while now.
I agree with your wife. Get the Model Y and save the money. It's not just the sticker price, but also taxes and insurance. You can afford the Model S Plaid, but it will not make you happier than a Model Y. It will also draw unnecessary attention.
Don’t let anyone make you feel dumb or like you’re a bad person for wanting to go ham on your ride. Ferraris and lambos actually retain their value pretty well :) assuming you’re not trying to get an everyday commuter. Some really nice rides around 100k that are better suited for an all around commuter car. I say go wild. Nothing is guaranteed.
Ferrari/lambo still very expensive for me(until crypt goes 10x) ! For now I have a model S plaid on order and delivery is in 2 months! I need to decided soon if I want it or not.
@Disney NW? 550 is good for a Lambo. You don’t lose the whole amount on the Lambo FYI
According to Blind, everyone has a Porsche Cayenne or Model Y
I see. Can u link any poll regarding that?
0, wfh now.
Great for you but some people really enjoy driving. For me driving(a nice car) in the twists works like therapy!
