Never understood Airbnb. The concept is flawed to begin with. Why would I give my house for strangers to live in? The way it was pitched/started was even more atrocious - have strangers live in your house to share culture! Wtf! From both owners' and customers' perspective hotels are safer with predictable service. Am I too old to not understand this Airbnb nonsense? or another silicon valley hype by founders? https://twitter.com/crazyclipsonly/status/1672236816123191297
It worked, didn't it ? I love renting a full house with a private pool and kitchen .. and cheap rooms I guess had a lot of appeal. Seems like a good way to make some extra cash on your guest room
It took off because at the end of the day everyone is looking for ways to make more money, and the barrier, other than having a room or house, to partipcate is low
I did Couchsurfing for a while (I housed guests for free in my spare room), it was a great experience! Airbnb was basically the same for some(?) money. Most people are funny, interesting, kind and honest if you haven't noticed.
Are they?
Concept is not new. Free couch surfing was already huge before Airbnb, back when the world was simpler and people just wanted to connect with fellow travelers. Airbnb just monetized it. Now everyone only cares about passive income, tax writeoffs, retire early blah blah.
I like Airbnb better than hotels tbh.
Too old or too young, I can't tell what you are. Airbnb was founded 15 years ago and now you're asking if it's a hype? From a safety perspective, why don't you question uber? You take countless strangers in your car.
OP probably never Ubered. 😀
It’s a good option for remote areas without many hotels but if your main goal is to spend time outside, it’s a very expensive option.
The concept of bed and breakfast existed before Airbnb. So all that is new here is the tech and ease of access. Why do you want to get into a strangers car by Uber? It’s the cost and convenience traded for risk
In the early days it was quite a bit cheaper than a hotel for what you got. Much better experience for the renter. Owners made money off of rooms or properties they weren't using. Airbnb had insurance and a rating system to cover any property damage concerns. Not sure what you're not understanding. If you could pay $250 a night for a hotel or $250/night for an entire house, wouldn't you take the house?
I’m a host and I primarily stay at AirBnBs when I travel. If you prefer staying in a hotel in a lame downtown location, that’s your call. I’d much rather stay at a cool property in an interesting neighborhood.
It used to actually be affordable and most owners and renters cared
u mean cheaper than hotels? even if this were the case there's too much risk for the owners.
Right but owners got paid for their risk and there was a rating system
