Hi all, This is my first time trying to move out of state. I am in the interview process and wondering how to tactfully say when I can start a position. I didn’t expect to hear back from jobs I applied to until a month or so from now, but I have two interviews next week. My situation: - Living out of state - Partner can’t move until June and we have a current lease so I can’t break it until they can move I had a recruiter tell me that one of the roles is looking to fill asap since its a new postion in their org with only one IC. I want to be flexible and willing to move sooner, but I am unsure how to go about this since I would have to pay for two leases. How should I let the HMs know my start date if they ask me next week, without over sharing? Please only kind constructive feedback. Thanks for your help!
What stage of the interview process is this?
Second round. The recruiter last week asked me when I could start during our initial call since I was out of state. I thought they ask after people get offers, so I was a little caught off guard.
I would be honest and say "I honestly didn't expect to hear back so soon about my application. My ideal start date would be sometime in June". And leave it at that. You leave yourself wiggle room as in you could start sooner but it wouldn't be ideal...and they might have to give you something extra in order to make it so.
See if they'll give you temp housing until you eventually move forreal. A lot of companies do it for 1 month anyway when they relocate people. Maybe they'll extend if you negotiate

My target start date is (your ideal start date) because of an ongoing lease. That said, I understand your urgency and if SoulessCorp is the right company for me and vice versa, I am sure we can work out an arrangement that works for both of us. When you land the offer, fold the cost of lease breaking into your relocation package.

Don't try to negotiate your comp/relocation until after you have the offer in hand. Just be vauge and open to working something out if you do get an offer.
Ask for a hiring bonus that covers the cost of serving out existing lease and move out and start.
