Starting as a new grad soon at Bloomberg and interested to become a team lead after a few years (maybe 5-6?). Curious to know what does it take to become a team lead or a manager in general at any company. Is it based on tenure, leadership skills, and luck? I have seen many people at Bloomberg stay a senior software engineer for over 10-20 years so wondering if it is difficult to transition to manager. TC: 188k
It is a personal preference for many of them to be an ic.
It’s all about networking. Find good mentors in leadership positions and do your best to support them. But you should first get 1-2 years experience under your belt then change companies, to drop the stigma of being a new grad.

There’s a good comp difference on levels for SSE and TL. If you get promoted from SSE to TL, will they get such a huge bump in pay?
i’ve heard ICs can make comparable amounts for a while. the diff usually gets larger when TLs go to engineering manager positions
There are some reasons that sse's at bloomberg stay sse instead of tl. Some straight up don't have the communication/social/people management skills that it takes to be a people manager. There are additional responsibilities that they might not want. For ex. TLs, at least in my area, are very technical and are pretty much always on call for any wps around their team. You're also like the first point of contact from other teams. Some people prefer just being an individual contributor vs manager thats always dealing with people. But yea, probably best to disclose that with your manager and TL as they literally went through the exact thing you want to do and they can let you know the steps and such to become a TL.
i would say that’s a ways away, don’t worry about it right now

Why I Find Free Palestine Inspiring
Step1: find an org that promotes within. I'm a part of a 3-digit IC org that hasn't seen someone get promoted to management in some 6 years. Other orgs will make it much easier on you. Look at your peers, your TLs, and their career history. 2. Make it known ASAP. It's a long process at BB and it really helps if you kick off the process years ahead of time
