I am at major crossroads, I have been a generalist but stumbled onto platform PM roles last few years. I am a data focused platform PM , I get lot of calls for Data or Platform PM roles. I enjoyed outbound customer facing PM roles before this, but for some reason companies seem to box me as a Platform PM for X. What works better in the long run for a successful career ? . Generalist PM that can pick up an product OR Domain Expert in a specific field and grow across Industries ? #product #productmanager
Both. Platform PMs with generalist skills on top are the real power players. Platform PMs are also definitely revenue generating if your business has a real platform component, and if you are doing your job as a platform PM! If you can nail this mix, the world is your oyster.
