I recently gave Amazon on-site interview in the hiring event for Alexa and got the offer pretty quickly. They are offering SDE2. I have 7+ years of work experience and want them to consider me for SDE3. What will it take for me to persuade them for this? Will competing offers help? Or simply putting forward my point strongly and asking them to take more interviews if needed?
7 year experience and you are expecting senior role(sde3)? And that too coming from a non FANG? Good luck with that.
I didn’t get the non fang part . VMware is pretty good. I was wondering why is he moving to Amazon when Vmware pay/perks and wlb are way better than Amazon. When I interviewed Amazon couldn’t match my Vmware pay.
That will be pretty tough to do.. levels are non negotiable most of the time.. Btw what your tc?
Level won't change after offer is made. Could have been negotiated during initial talks with recruiter before interviews
10 yrs outside of amazon came in as SDE2..interviewed for SDE3. after 3 yrs got promoted to SDE 3. Level is non negotiable. seen SDE 2 industry hires from 5-12 yoe.
👆this.. 11 yoe from msft, I bagged an offer last month .. got sde 2 even though I had offers 3 other senior offers. They matched competing offers comp wise but sde 2 was non negotiable
But your tc will explain a lot more things.. if they have gave you a comp of 10 years exp person than it should be fine. So it would be difficult to discuss until you tell your tc
+1 to the comment. 11 YOE and was. Sr. Staff Engineer at a non-FAANG but reputable tech company. I was interviewed for SDE 3 but got SDE 2, that was 2 years ago. Currently writing v2 of my promo doc for SDE 3. @OP - You'd rather come at SDE 2 level with a better TC then current TC, prove yourself and get promoted. Alexa org has some pretty good SDE 3s and you don't want to end up as a LE in your first year
Because at blind itself I read that people are getting sde 3 comparatively easily in the Alexa Dept. Not sure if those r because they are from FANG or not.
Lol. Alexa is many VPs. Each have their own orgs with very different culture and standards. But in mine, external hire as SDE3 is nearly unheard of. Principal Engineer hire is actually easier.
Level is determined by the bar raiser, non negotiable. It doesn’t depend on yoe but how you did on interview. A key difference between sde2 and sde3 is system design and leadership.
What’s you’d final tc at amazon ? Did you have to negotiate multiple times? I am in a similiar situation
99% of the time level is final
