Hi all, I wanted to get some advice from the blind community and see if anyone has pivoted from the game industry as a programmer to something else. Up until now, I thought I wanted to be in games but I’ve realized this might not be where I want to start my career as a new grad. I’d love to work at maybe a game adjacent company like Roblox, Meta (VR), Apple (VR), or NVIDIA where I can still retain my skill set that I’ve developed so far, but I know I have to grind and get better at leetcode to pass those interviews (Actively working on it). What other companies can I try and apply to where I can still retain some of my primary skills (C++, Python, Linear Algebra, Game Engines)? TLDR: How do I pivot from a gameplay programmer from the game industry to a different non-game industry company? #gaming #newgrad
What he said ^ you can also try your hand at security, use the low level systems knowledge that you previously used to optimize games, and apply that towards breaking systems' security. Legally, of course. And then brag about doing so publicly. Security is in heavy need of talent nowadays. Also aerospace/defense is the other user of C++ knowledge. And graphics.
Full time game dev is a bad idea. The CEO or people at the top make money, others get 🥜 and poor wlb. Get a high paying general dev job and keep doing game development as a side hussle or hobby. If some day your game gets viral, then you can start thinking about doing game dev full time by starting your own company.
I wish I realized this sooner. Keeping game dev as a hobby is definitely what I should’ve done. Can I ask what you do at NVIDIA?
I'm into real time video streaming (webRTC, HLS, RTSP etc). I work with C++ and cloud most of the time.
Knowing python and having solid math background can open the door to many AIML positions. The pay would be like 10x more than in game industry and load likewise 10x less. I'm not in AI/ML but know people from there and have some idea on what their work load looks like.
Usually ML requires a masters no?
Depends on how picky hiring manager is.

Any industry that uses C++ and has low latency requirements can be good fit, like car or financial industry.
