Practice your pip. Find an incompetent guy and put extreme pressure on them to perform well. If they perform well under pressure, claim that you “mentored” them successfully and take all the credit. Else, pip them and take credit for “managing out a weak hire”. If you can do this at scale, then congrats! Now you’re a great manager.
Seriously though, take care of your employees. Understand your team’s bandwidth and your org’s priorities well. Learn to accordingly push out the “fake” deadlines and focus on the real ones. It’s not a hard job intellectually, you’ll learn on the go. The workload can get taxing though.
